Final Week of Rube Goldberg

This is our final week of building and working on the Rube Goldberg Project. All construction must be complete by the end of the day on Friday, May 12th. All presentation begin on Monday, May 15th.

Remember, there are many parts and many points to this project. Please consult the Rube Goldberg Packet for details.

Parents, if you are wondering how to best support your child as he/she finishes this momentous project, please read the following. If you have additional questions feel free to contact me directly.

Things Parents can do to help their child finish Rube:
  • Ask them to explain their plan to you and get a report on how much they have actually built that is finished and working.
  • Ask about the jobs/responsibilities of each member going into the home stretch.
  • Encourage them to come in for the open classroom build sessions which I have every morning from 7:45-8:30 and again each afternoon from 2:45-3:30. They definitely need the time to work outside of class.
  • We do not allow them to take the project home, so this open class time is critical.
  • If you missed Open House, feel free to drop in some morning or afternoon to see how things are going. Alternatively, you can ask them to take pix/video before/after school to show you.
  • Finally, have them study the packet on my website to identify ways of earning extra points to make up for any points they lose.

Simple Machines videos

Watch the 'Eureka' videos, episodes 11-15 to learn about Simple Machines. There are six types of simple machines but all of them are variations of one very basic simple machine, the inclined plane. The wedge, the lever, the wheel & axel, the pulley, and even the screw are all variations of the 'sloping flat thing'. Remember, you MUST include 3 simple machines in your project but can earn EXTRA POINTS by including more. Each simple machine you use must be different and separate from the others.

Writing a CER

Use the attached poster to help you write a CER. Remember; the Claim should be written in the, "If...then,..because..." format; the Evidence needs to include your data (actual numbers); and the Reasoning should provide the science behind the claim (explain why the evidence supports the claim using concepts from class).
