Description of Course

Parents and students, please access the course syllabus by CLICKING HERE. I want to first note that this is a grade-level course for all 8th-grade students.  This course precedes Algebra I, which your children will be enrolled in for 9th grade.

Many years ago this course was called Pre-Algebra, and in fact, we will be covering many of the same topics that were covered in that course.

Some of the algebraic concepts we will study include:  graphing lines, solving multi-step equations, and distinguishing between proportional and non-proportional relationships in real-life situations and applications.

The implementation and design of the Common Core standards aim for the Math-8 course (or our "pre-algebra" course) to set up our kids for success in their upcoming years in high school.  We spend 1/3 of the year reinforcing key algebraic concepts for Algebra (9th grade), then 1/3 of the year introducing them to Geometry (10th grade), and the last 1/3 we spend working on Probability & Statistics.

Parents and students, please note that students in this course tend to need more support at the beginning of the year when we are studying algebraic concepts. So please plan ahead!  As always, we thank you for your support!

Retake Policy

Our Math-8 course has the following set policies in order to provide our students an opportunity to show mastery of the standards:

  • Students are eligible to retake any UNIT TEST if their original score is BELOW 70%, for a MAXIMUM retake score of 70%.
  • Retakes are scheduled for one week after the original assessment.   The retake will be comprised of similar questions to the original, but the questions will not be identical.

Make-Up Policy

This page is dedicated to students who wish to make up a point deficit on a homework assignment or an assessment. Not only will these opportunities help give you a boost in your grade, but it's also a great way to get more practice on those skills you haven't quite mastered yet, or perhaps missed as a result of an absence.

General Rule
Submit ALL make-up work before or on the date of the unit test.
(This general rule is set forth in accordance with our school's policy)

Homework Assignments
Homework assignments are deducted 30% if late (i.e., 3.5/5 on our rubric).  These include MathXL, or worksheet assignments.

Quizzes
We consider quizzes as checkpoints for both the student and the teacher.  It allows us to gauge how well students are understanding the lessons.  If they do well, we are good; but if you do not do well on the quiz then we know that we have to study a little more before the unit test.  The quiz scores will only be replaced by the unit test score if the unit test score is higher; otherwise, the quiz score stays the same.

Students that are absent on the day of a quiz may find it advantageous to make it up if they feel confident they can earn a higher score than the upcoming unit test.
