Description of Course
Parents and students, please access the course syllabus for a list of topics and units of study for this course. I want to first note that this is a TWO-YEAR advanced course for an 8th-grade student; typically taken during their sophomore year of high school. This course precedes Algebra 2, which your children will enroll in 9th grade, should they choose that pathway. Students will have the option to choose a regular Algebra 2 course or an Accelerated Algebra 2 course in high school.
Our Geometry Common Core program has been carefully crafted to provide an excellent experience and education. In collaboration with Ms. Alicia Barton (Fisher Teacher), we have designed a course that is both fair and meets the California Common Core Standards but is also flexible enough to provide the rigor and challenge that an advanced student would need.
Due to the nature of the population of our students, we knew that it was fundamentally important to create a curriculum that allowed for both the teacher and students to differentiate up whenever needed. It's important to understand that the culture in this course is quite competitive and serious, but it is because of this very same element that the students in this class will obtain the opportunity to push themselves to new heights and set new goals that they never thought about before. This is what makes this course very special. Students will learn a new set of mathematical principles they've never seen before. Some of these include writing two-column proofs, transformational geometry, trigonometry, and a more robust experience in probability and statistics.
Retake Policy
Our Geometry Common Core program has the following set policies in order to provide our students an opportunity to show mastery of the standards:
- Students are eligible to retake any CHAPTER QUIZ or MIDTERM TEST if their original score is BELOW 70%, for a MAXIMUM retake score of 70%.
- Fall and Spring semester Final Exams are NOT eligible for retakes.
- Retakes are scheduled for one week after the original assessment. The retake will be comprised of similar questions to the original, but the questions will not be identical.
