Homework: Print and Bind Story!

-On Day 1 of next week, please come to class with your story printed and bound in some fashion.
-Like we talked about in class on Thurs./Fri. last week, you can bind in any way that you see fit, although the minimum is that it must be printed and stapled.  Remember that this is your opportunity to 'publish' your story in a way that makes you proud of all the work you have accomplished! If you want to do a little extra, you are more than welcome to do so and some examples of what that may look like are the following:
  • Use ribbon or yarn with three hole punches on the left side of the paper. (Generic example)
  • Use a professional portfolio cover like someone may use in a business setting to present a project. (Generic example)
  • Create an actual title and dedication page - illustrating a cover page, as though it's an actual published book.
  • Or any other creative way in which you would like to bind your story!

Homework: WW Session 4+5: My Story's Three Arcs

-Return to your own story idea.
-Create at least three story arcs for your own story.  Draw them out like Vonnegut’s physical visual example.  Label the highs, lows, and stagnant movement with details about movement in your story.
-Each arc could either be about a certain significant moment in your story or the arc could reflect the entirety of the story from start to finish (like Vonnegut's Cinderella example).
-You must label and explain the various points of movement within each arc with short explanations, although the descriptions can be more detailed if you would like.  You can also include visual picture illustrations (like the ones in the graphic example that you saw in class and is attached to this posting) if you would like.
-Keep in mind: Each arc you create should be better than the last.  Gets better and stronger each time!
--> Complete in comp book. Title this homework assignment: WW 4+5 : My Story’s Three Arcs

Assignment

Homework - "Ideas for Fiction": One of the ways to get ideas for fiction is to read through newspapers to get inspired.  Look for interesting and quirky stories that really happened and imagine how you might change them or transform them into something else.

Tonight for HW:

-Push yourself to get as many possible ideas for realistic fiction stories as possible and jot them down in your comp book under, “Ideas for Fiction”.  You can use one of the strategies we talked about today.  You may want to read a newspaper or blog for some current events to inspire you, or you might even invent your own strategy.

-Write down these ideas in bullet points - they do not need to be complete thoughts, just ideas! Aim for a minimum of a 1/2 page.

Strategies:

  • A time when you had very strong emotions.
  • Of a person important to you.
  • Of the first time you did something.
  • Of the last time you did something.
  • Of a time you learned a lesson from something you did or experienced.
  • Of places you have been or like to go.
