6th Period 8th Grade English-Period 6 Assignments

We will be returning our Outsiders books. Please bring your book to class.

Rough draft of memoir is due on Monday. Bring a printed or hand-written draft to class, so we can peer edit. Assignment and rubric is in my Google classroom.

Complete Memoir Brainstorm and Outline sheet which is found in my Google Classroom.

Please print or nearly handwrite your best (or favorite) form poem. Be prepared to share.

Finish any of the IXL work that was not finished in class.

 

Write a villanelle. The assignment and examples are in my Google classroom.

Finish the Poem Analysis Assessment which is found in my Google Classroom. It is due when you walk into class on Monday.

If you are absent you need to complete the poetry analysis of "American Cheese".

Be prepared to do your poetry recitation and hand in your printed Poetry Recitation Packet. The Packet is found in my Google Classroom.

Please do pages 3 and 4 of the Poetry Recitation Packet which can be found in my Google Class under the heading "Poetry Recitation Project."

Please complete the poetry transcription for the Poetry Recitation Project. The assignment is found in my Google Classroom.

Finish the cockroach connotation worksheet found in my Google Classroom.

Please complete your cento poem. The assignment is in the Google Slideshow and the full assignment is in my Google Classroom

Go to my Google Classroom, open the document titled Emancipation Quest Notes. Scroll down in the document and answer the three boxed prompts. One of those prompts will be your in-class writing assignment. Find textual evidence to help you answer those questions. All the documents from the files are also in my Google Classroom.

Either go to Amplify and listen to four other narratives from a file that you did not have in class or go to my Google Classroom and read four other narrative that you did not have in class. You must takes notes on the Emancipation Quest note sheet (found in my Google classroom) for each narrative.

A rough draft of your essay is due on Monday. Please bring a printed copy of the essay so you can peer-edit with a partner. I have attached the assignment with links to the rubric, optional outline, and citation guidelines.

If you were absent today, please go to Amplify Sub-unit 6, Lesson 1, and do Activities 1, 2, and 3. It is a reading assessment.

If you would like to redo any Amplify lessons for The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, you may do the questions attached. Please print the questions, and bring the paper to me. If you were absent we read the preface, chapter 1, and chapter 2 of The Boy's War. Please answer the questions in Amplify Sub-Unit 2, Lesson 2, Activity 7.

If you were absent today, please do Amplify Sub-Unit 2 Lesson 1 Activities 4 and 6. 

If you were absent we read Ch. 9 and Ch. 10 of The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass in Amplify. I have attached the questions for for those questions.

The SSR One-Pager is due December 2. It is attached.

If you were absent today, we read Chapter's 4 and 5 from the Narrative of Frederick Douglass in Amplify Lesson 7, Activity 9 and answered the questions.

Be prepared to write your timed in-class essay. You can use your outline, your "Write long" and anything else that has been give to you in class to help you write. Refer to my slideshows and handouts in my Google classroom if you're having trouble thinking about what to write.

Bring a printed copy of your Author's Craft Essay on Monday. If you need assistance print, please see me before your class (before school, break, or lunch).

Complete a draft of your writer's craft essay you need to have 4-6 paragraphs in 2-3 pages. Times New Roman Font 12 point. You have must have:

 

1. Introduction

2. Body Paragraph 1

3. Body Paragraph 2

4. Body Paragraph 3 (optional)

5. Counter argument (either in its own paragraph or part of another body paragraph)

Complete the outline for the Author's craft essay and look for evidence. 

Write one page, single-spaced, about symbols in either "All Summer in a Day" or "A Sound of Thunder." Make sure to add two claims at the bottom of the page. I have attached both the slides from today as well as an example to help you write if you are stuck.

 Your first One-Pager is due October 2nd. I have attached a copy of the sheet if you would like to type the assignment.

Reminder: Your SSR one-pager is due. Also make sure you have completed one-page about writer's craft moves. I have attached the slides from the lecture if you would like to use them for reference.

Revise your essay and add logic to any parts of your essay that need more logical structure. Add a counterargument to any places that may be refuted by somebody else, and add an example of a gerund phrase.

You will have to write a four-paragraph theme essay for All Summer in a Day. Please complete the outline that is attached to help you.

Please read "A Sound of Thunder" by Ray Bradbury and complete the plot diagram as well as the reading questions. I have attached all of those things for you if you need them.

Please finish your new draft of the All Summer in a Day theme write. I have attached my example if you have any questions. Also please bring a copy of your theme write and your independent reading book next class.

Today in class we did our grammar warm-up 1.1 (Elements of a Complete Sentence. You can find this in the warm-ups page.) We also took notes (LiteraryDevices that Authors use to Highlight Theme) which you can find in the notes section. Homework: Complete the "All Summer in a Day" Figurative language sheet and the illustration sheet. 

Read and complete the activity on sheet Unit 1A Elements of the Complete Sentence. I have attached it for you as well.

In your composition notebook, write three theme statements using the sentence frame provided at the end of the Plot Structure and Theme notes. I have attached the notes to help you.

 Complete the "How to Write a Thematic Essay" sheet for "All Summer in a Day." I have attached the sheet as well a a copy of the short story.

 VOCABULARY QUIZ: You will be having a vocabulary quiz. You will need to be able to write a sentence using the vocabulary word in context. I have attached the vocabulary sheet in case you need it.

 Please complete your colored Pictoword. I have attached examples if you are confused about what to do. Remember, you are incorporating the word with a visual representation of the definition. It is not just the word and a picture. The black and white one is an example I drew in 3rd period. Yours should be way better than mine :)

IN-CLASS TIMED WRITING ASSESSMENT:  Think of a topic or issue you care about, an issue around which you have a very strong opinion. On Monday, you will have 45 minutes to write an essay in which you will write your opinion or claim and argue why it is right, telling reasons why you feel that way. When you do this, draw on everything you know about essays. If you want to find and use information from a book or another outside source (notes), you may bring that with you on Monday. Please keep in mind that you'll have 45 minutes to complete this, so you will need to plan, draft, revise and edit in once sitting. In your writing, make sure you:

This is for me to see where you are as a writer. Please do not write the essay ahead of time, but you are welcome to take notes--gathering sources and quotes--and bring them to class on Monday.

Create 8 (rough drafts) 6-word-memoirs. Then choose your best/favorite one, and either illustrate it or find a graphic that captures the spirt of the memoir. I will be collecting both the rough drafts as well as the illustrated final draft.
