K - 8 English Language Arts curriculum

March 23, 2018

Dear Los Gatos Union School District Parents and Guardians:

During the 2016-17 school year, Los Gatos Union School District (LGUSD) began the process of updating instructional materials to align with Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts. Since that time, the LGUSD team of teacher-leaders, principals, and administrators completed a thorough process to review and evaluate the state-recommended materials for English Language Arts.

The process and timeline our staff undertook included:

  1. Initial review of materials to select programs to pilot with students (December 2016-January 2017)

  2. Training pilot teachers for implementation (K-5 Teachers on August 28-29 2017 and December 4-5 2017, Fisher English Department on August 15th 2017 and October 9th 2017)

  3. Piloting materials with students and a comparison evaluation of the resources (August 2017 – March 2018)

  4. Selecting the recommended resources for adoption (Grades 6-8 on February 7th 2018 and Grades K-5 on March 15th 2018)

    • The K-5 team of educators selected the National Geographic Reach for Reading materials as the recommended adoption for LGUSD with implementation beginning in the 2018-19 school year.

    • The middle school English department selected the The Units of Study in Writing and Amplify Reading as the recommended adoptions with implementation beginning in the 2018-2019 school year.

It is the intent of the Board of Trustees to adopt materials which:

  • Contain content supporting the philosophy, goals, and objectives of the District

  • Contain accurate and current information

  • Are written at the appropriate difficulty level for the students using them

  • Provide continuous and sequential content for all grades in a given subject

  • Are designed for practical use by students and teachers

  • Align with the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts

The selected curriculum programs will be presented to the Board of Trustees at the April 23, 2018 Regular Board meeting with a recommendation for adoption. Materials from the selected programs will be on public display in the small conference room at the LGUSD district office starting April 2, 2018 through Friday, April 6, 2018 and Monday, April 16, 2018 through Friday, April 20, 2018, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. You are invited to examine the materials on display.

Please note that the District Offices will be closed from April 9-13, 2018 for Spring Break.
