Assignment

If you did not do so in class, please revise your lead.  If you are happy with your current lead, practice writing a second lead in a different style either below your first lead, and highlight it, or write it on a separate document.
Also, in your writing notebook, jot down some ideas, techniques, and strategies that you will try to make your story stronger.  Perhaps you will study mentor texts to emulate style, or add a dramatic scene, or maybe you will add more dialogue to help with characterization.  It is up to you, but make sure you jot ideas down that you will actually try.

Assignment

Young Writers, for homework, look at your draft through the lens of paragraphing for purpose. See if you are using your paragraphs as a tool for organization, letting them help you separate some ideas and connect others.  If you are struggling, look at mentor texts, such as your IRB to study the author's paragraphing techniques.
Remember-we use paragraphs wisely to move in place and time, to highlight something, for dramatic impact and to create dialogue.

Assignment

Tonight, as you look over what you have written so far, see if you can play around with transitional words and phrases. Experiment with when and how in your stories you move from summary to scene and from one place or time to another-either in the action itself or in your character's head.  As you do, pay attention to which parts of your story feel important to stretch out--which parts make you want to slow down and story tell, bit by bit--and which you think are better told as summary.  Highlight your transitional words and phrases.  Remember to replace "then" with other word choices so you are not just recounting what happened.  Please see the following guide in addition to the ones we went over in class today (They are also included in the PDF).

Seeing the world through your character's eyes:
Tonight, try seeing the world through your character's eyes as a way to get to know your main character better.  Think to yourself, 'What would my character be thinking in this situation? What would my character be doing?  Then take a few minutes to jot those thoughts down in your writer's notebook.  You can make a T-chart.  On one side write thoughts, and on the other side write actions.
