Speech | First Completed Draft (+ Lesson Overview for Wednesday 5/1) in Google Classroom

Speech | First Completed Draft (+ Lesson Overview for Wednesday 5/1)

Greetings,
Mrs. G is out sick again today but hopes to be back by Day 3 of class.  Work independently and diligently today. We will be switching gears to Poetry on Day 3, so keep in mind that this is your last work period on your speech for about a week. We will select speech date/time slots on Day 3 of class.

--> In terms of your speech topics and plans for your speech, Mrs. G will check in with you directly either Day 3 this week or Day 1 of next. For the time being, proceed forward with what you are thinking/planning and we can readjust/modify as needed in the very near future.

Please complete the following this class period:

1) Speech Outline
-Check to make sure this is done from last class (Day 1).
-If you still need to work on this outline to brainstorm ideas, please do that, prior to moving on to your draft.
-If you are still stuck, look at the mentor speeches on GC and/or the prompts you wrote about in your comp book for inspiration.

2) First Completed Speech Draft
-Once finished with the Outline, you will spend the remainder of the class period beginning your first draft.
-The due date of this first draft is Thursday, May 9 at 8:30am, as we will be spending class on Thursday 5/9 (a minimum day) giving peer feedback in order to prep for the delivery of speeches which start the week of May 13.
-Write your first draft on the document provided in this assignment posting titled, "Spring Speech | Draft 1"
-You will notice that there is an area for you to indicate a 'Song Selection'.  You are probably wondering, what does Mrs. G mean by "Song Selection"??  Well, after delivering your speech, the entire class will reflect privately on your speech and while doing so, your chosen song will play.
This song might cater to the content/topic of your speech or it may cater to the mood/tone of your speech.
It does need to be *clean* and school appropriate. (If you have any concerns about your song not following this guideline, pick a different song and/or check in with Mrs. G.
Pick your song with intention!
Make sure it is available on Apple Music or if you know it is not, please include a hyperlink in your title linking it to YouTube.
It may be in a different language.
It may be completely instrumental.
You may have a song in mind right away or you may have no idea right now, and that is fine too! Wait until you are done writing your speech to determine your song selection, as hopefully the writing of your speech inspires you to select a particular song.
-Spend the remainder of the period drafting your speech!
-Work silently and independently! If you need to ask a peer a quick question, do so, then get back to work!
You may be wondering: "How many paragraphs is it supposed to be?!"  There is no requirement, but naturally your speech better be constructed into various paragraphs. Think: naturally where do you change the scene or switch to a different point? Or where should a long breath be taken??  --> A paragraph break should probably go there!
Remember: It is not about "how many paragraphs" but rather, the speech needs to be more than 2 minutes and less than 4 minutes in length.  Most likely you will be writing about 2-3 double-spaced pages, although that varies per person.

Craft Essay - Final Draft in Google Classroom

Craft Essay - Final Draft

Today you have 90-minutes to produce a Craft Essay. Attached is the prompt - please use it to guide you during the writing process. Manage your time so that you are able to produce the entire four-paragraph essay during the course of the class period.

You May Use:
-Outline (turned in on GC)
-Essay Graphic Organizer (turned in on GC) (feel free to unsubmit, but leave attached on GC - it will not be marked "late" by Mrs. G)
-Any other writing tools/notes in your comp book
-The physical stories - either the hard copies (if you have them in your possession) or you may use the electronic versions (attached to this assignment post).
-The spellcheck tool on Google Docs
-The Annotations + Reminders Doc (attached on this assignment post)

Reminders:
-Only Annotations: Underline your counterargument and corresponding rebuttal. (At least one CA + Rebuttal must exist at least once in your essay - either Body P) + * The last punctuation of your strongest body P *

-Proofread your writing before submitting!
-Whatever is finished by the end of the 90-minute period is the essay Mrs. G will be grading. You need to manage your time; keep an eye on the clock, as you should be averaging about 20-22 minutes per paragraph. If you are a very thorough/detailed writer, do your best to get down all of the main basics for each paragraph first, then return to each paragraph to enhance each with greater detail. A completed essay that shows your mastery of all the key components of a comparative is better than you crafting an essay in which multiple components are missing, but perhaps you did a really good job with one body paragraph. Find a balance between quality and quantity.
-If time, review the rubric!

-Remember: You must include at least one counter argument and corresponding rebuttal in your essay - either in Body 1 or Body 2 or BOTH :)

If you finish all of the above items and there is still time remaining in the class period, please read your IR book.  (If you have outstanding work for a different class that needs to be completed, that is fine too).

Theme Essay | Final Draft in Google Classroom

Theme Essay | Final Draft

1. Transform your Body Paragraph Graphic Organizer (Outline) into your Final Draft
-Take all of the components from your organizer and reformat them on the attached doc "Theme Essay | Final Draft"
-Essentially, get rid of the graphic organizer, so your fresh Final Draft doc looks like two gorgeously crafted Body Ps.

2. Read --> Edit --> Revise
-After crafting your two GORGEOUS Ps, then spend some time reading through your draft. Think: Do things make sense? How is the flow of your essay?  Are things organized? What is missing? What needs to improve?
-After reading through, fix things! Edit! Revise! Build up your essay to be stronger!

3. Rubric Review
-Take a look at the rubric.
-Compare the rubric criteria to your essay product!
-Consider: How would you score? What can you do to make your essay stronger?
-Spend some more time revising!

4. Annotations + Reminders
-Super Important: complete the required annotations requested of you (these can be found on the doc titled, "Theme | Final Draft Annotations and Reminders")
-Review the reminders given to you.

5. Essay Feedback
-On Day 3 (3/21) and Day 4 (3/22), we will continue to draft - moving to a finished final product.
-By the conclusion of class on Day 3, you will share your essay with your WW partner for feedback.

6. Print Out Essay (Hardy Copy)
-Your final draft is due at the start of class on Day 1 next week.
-Print out a hard copy of your essay, as you will physically turn this in (in addition to submitting on GC).

WW | Core Text: "The Knowers" + 'Text Notes' Graphic Organizer

After reading and annotating "The Knowers" in class on Day 1, you will complete the 'Text Notes' graphic organizer for the reading.  This may be started in class, but for the most part will be worked on for homework.

Note: For the 'Plot Drawing' use the drawing tool to create a plot graph, including details for: exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution.

Note: In "Noteworthy Decisions Made by the Author" you will make at least 5 observations regarding unique things the author includes in the text.  Most likely, this observation will be what we will eventually call a craft move - perhaps descriptive language, metaphor, simile, alliteration, imagery, etc.

Note: In "Noteworthy Decisions Made by the Author" you will make at least 5 observations regarding unique things the author includes in the text.  Most likely, this observation will be what we will eventually call a craft move - perhaps descriptive language, metaphor, simile, alliteration, imagery, etc.

1/31 | Grammar Wednesday: Nouns, Articles, Adverbs, Adjectives, Prepositions - IXL Practice

The following IXLs are designed to help you practice for the grammar test happening Day 3 of class. The test is similar to the style of your past two quizzes with the only change being that this test is cumulative - nouns, articles, adverbs, and adjectives - in addition to prepositions and prepositional phrases.  For this class period, you are to spend 10 minutes on each IXL. Ms. Lombardo will keep time to inform you of when to each 10-minute interval has been completed and it is time to move to the next practice lesson.  If you personally choose to spend more than 10 minutes on one IXL because you would benefit from having more practice with that particular skill, you are free to make that choice; do what works best for you.

--> You do not need to *finish* these for homework or get to a particular SmartScore for any of these - use this period for practice and exposure to the skill in order to prepare for the test on Day 3.

That same group member will be the only group member to attach the document here on this GC post.  Make sure that the document gets attached, but not 'turned in' until the entire group is finished with the document, as once it gets turned in, the other group members lose editing access.

Today:
1) Signpost: Claim a signpost! - pick one you have not already chosen in the past two club meetings.
2) Levels of Questioning: You will have 10 minutes to craft/design your three questions. Then, as a group you will have your lit circle discussion - use the questions you craft to guide your discussion of your most recent reading.
3) Seminar Chat: Required at least once during your mini seminar: in your answer response (C - Claim), use the physical text (E - Evidence) (open your book! reference your reading!), to support your argument (C), and to enhance your explanation (R - Reasoning).
4) Levels of Questioning - Document Evidence: In the group document, note the evidence (E) you used - include your initials and page number that was referenced (ex: JG: p164).
--> Each group member must have at least one E citation entry for the entirety of the group seminar conversation.

Once each group member has been given the opportunity to share and discuss at least one of their level two or level 3 questions, the group can then move to complete the remainder of the document until all groups have finished with their mini seminar.

Book Review | Q2 in Google Classroom

Book Review | Q2

Playlist Curation: Q2 Indie Book (Book Review for Q2)
You will create a song playlist that is representative of your chosen Q2 IR book.
Pick five song selections - the best 5 that connect to character(s) or a scene(s) or event(s) from your book. You may not select songs from the attached assignment examples, and, if your book is also a movie, no soundtrack songs may be part of your curated list because a film professional has already selected the songs to match the story. Up to 2 songs may be without lyrics, as long as the analysis focuses on the tone, emotion, mood, etc. conveyed via instrumentation and composition.
Songs may not have excessive profanity and may not have violence, discrimination, or abuse.
In addition to the book summary slide, you will write 5 paragraphs total - for each one of the 5 songs you will write a paragraph justifying why you selected that particular song.
Each paragraph will be a CER: Claim, Evidence, Reasoning. You will make a claim (create an argument about how the song selection connects to that character/moment/event/etc. in the book), provide evidence, and explain your reasoning. Each CER should be a minimum of 5 meaningfully constructed sentences. Your E (evidence) can come in the form of a direct quote. At least 3 of the quotes need to be from your novel (2 can be quotes from your song selection. No profanity may be quoted.
For example, one of your paragraphs may look something like this: "The main character in my book would listen to "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" by the artist, Taylor Swift, because the song is moody and sad and connects to the same feelings Sammy felt in the novel. In the song, it is clear that Taylor is a mixture of upset, angry, sad, and frustrated - the same feelings Sammy feels when they break up with Erik. In the middle of the book the reader can see the downfall and finality of the relationship when Sammy texts Erik one last time, "That is the last time I trust you. Never again" (Steinsen 152).  Both Sammy and Taylor make a commitment that they will never allow themselves to be broken again by the person they once loved."
You will complete this assignment as a Google Slides slideshow, not a Google Doc. You will need to open a new Google Slides slideshow and attach it here to this assignment post. The first slide of your slideshow will be a title slide showcasing the book you read and your name. On each of the five additional slides, you will put the song title and artist as the title of each slide, and then write your paragraph in the main text box. Feel free to add visuals to all or some of the slides. Be as creative as you wish. You will be graded on the 5 CERs, specifically how you support the claim you design about your character and the song chosen.
E (Evidence): At least 3 of your 5 citations must be taken directly from your book. (Meaning: 2 of the 5 can be quotes from the song itself)
Examples are attached for your reference.
Slidedeck Slides:
Slide 1: Title Slide - including your name and the name (title and author) of the book you will be reviewing.
Slide 2: Summary/Plot Overview Slide - Give a novel summary of 5 or more sentences summary that includes rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution. Summarize the book in your own words.
Slide 3: Song 1 - CER
Slide 4: Song 2 - CER
Slide 5: Song 3 - CER
Slide 6: Song 4 - CER
Slide 7: Song 5 - CER
Structure Options:
Focus on Multiple Characters: 1 song per character
Focus on Five Different Key Scenes/Moments in the Book: 1 song per scene
Focus on a Mixture - Songs for individual characters and specific scenes.
