5th Period: English 8

Greetings, 
Mrs. G is out sick again today but hopes to be back by Day 3 of class.  Work independently and diligently today. We will be switching gears to Poetry on Day 3, so keep in mind that this is your last work period on your speech for about a week. We will select speech date/time slots on Day 3 of class. 

--> In terms of your speech topics and plans for your speech, Mrs. G will check in with you directly either Day 3 this week or Day 1 of next. For the time being, proceed forward with what you are thinking/planning and we can readjust/modify as needed in the very near future. 

Please complete the following this class period:

1) Speech Outline
-Check to make sure this is done from last class (Day 1). 
-If you still need to work on this outline to brainstorm ideas, please do that, prior to moving on to your draft. 
-If you are still stuck, look at the mentor speeches on GC and/or the prompts you wrote about in your comp book for inspiration. 

2) First Completed Speech Draft
-Once finished with the Outline, you will spend the remainder of the class period beginning your first draft.  
-The due date of this first draft is Thursday, May 9 at 8:30am, as we will be spending class on Thursday 5/9 (a minimum day) giving peer feedback in order to prep for the delivery of speeches which start the week of May 13. 
-Write your first draft on the document provided in this assignment posting titled, "Spring Speech | Draft 1" 
-You will notice that there is an area for you to indicate a 'Song Selection'.  You are probably wondering, what does Mrs. G mean by "Song Selection"??  Well, after delivering your speech, the entire class will reflect privately on your speech and while doing so, your chosen song will play.  
This song might cater to the content/topic of your speech or it may cater to the mood/tone of your speech.  
It does need to be *clean* and school appropriate. (If you have any concerns about your song not following this guideline, pick a different song and/or check in with Mrs. G.
Pick your song with intention!  
Make sure it is available on Apple Music or if you know it is not, please include a hyperlink in your title linking it to YouTube. 
It may be in a different language. 
It may be completely instrumental.  
You may have a song in mind right away or you may have no idea right now, and that is fine too! Wait until you are done writing your speech to determine your song selection, as hopefully the writing of your speech inspires you to select a particular song.
-Spend the remainder of the period drafting your speech!
-Work silently and independently! If you need to ask a peer a quick question, do so, then get back to work! 
You may be wondering: "How many paragraphs is it supposed to be?!"  There is no requirement, but naturally your speech better be constructed into various paragraphs. Think: naturally where do you change the scene or switch to a different point? Or where should a long breath be taken??  --> A paragraph break should probably go there! 
Remember: It is not about "how many paragraphs" but rather, the speech needs to be more than 2 minutes and less than 4 minutes in length.  Most likely you will be writing about 2-3 double-spaced pages, although that varies per person.
