This assignment was discussed in class on Day 2 (4/18 or 4/19).
As a reminder, if you commit to working with 1 or 2 other group members, you are committing to:
1) Working together cooperatively.
2) Equally sharing responsibilities.
3) Understanding fully that together you are earning one collective 'product' grade.
--> If any of the above are concerns for you, you should work independently on this assignment.
--> Start by tracking down your selected poem in the 'Student Course Reader'. Copy and paste only your selected poem in a new fresh document, which you can later print. The annotations must be completed by hand.
--> By Monday 4/24, each group member needs to have a hard copy of their poem printed in class. During this class period, you and your group will spend time annotating the poem by hand.
--> By Monday 5/1, the 'Group Poem Analysis Assessment' needs to be completed electronically/typed on, then printed out, so that you have a physical hard copy for your conference that may begin as early as Monday 5/1. One person in the group needs to make 'a copy' of the document, then share it will all group members, so that each member has editing privileges. This hard copy, along with the annotated poem hard copies, are due Monday 5/1.
--> Conferences will be happening the week of 5/1, but every group's work is due Monday 5/1, even though your conference may be happening later in the week.

Greetings,
Today, Ms. Lombardo is your guest teacher. Please be focused this class period. If you finish your classwork in class, you will not have homework, other than to work on your Book Review. Work diligently and independently. Here is the overview of your day today:
1) Independent Reading
-Read your independent reading book for 20 minutes.
-Ms. Lombardo will let you know when the reading period has concluded.
2) Journal
-Title: "Speech | Prompt 2: The Future"
-See the attached screenshot for the prompt.
-Respond to the journal prompt in your comp book.
-Time yourself: give yourself 8-10 minutes to complete your journal response. Once finished, put your comp away and move onto the next item (below).
3) Comparing Speeches
-For this assignment, you will be reading/listening to various speeches in order to compare their unique qualities and attributes.
-On the attached "Spring Speech Assignment" document (the one you saw on Day 2), you will find various links to sample speeches from all three genres - personal narrative, informational, and persuasive.
-From those mentor offerings, select two from each genre to analyze in the attached assignment, "Speech | Speech Sampling of Mentor Speeches". You may NOT select "Always Go to the Funeral", since we already listened to and analyzed that together as a class.
-If you have headphones, you may use those to listen to the mentor samples that have audio/video. If you do not have headphones, any speeches with audio/video need to be listened to at home or pick a different mentor speech to review.
-Feel free to listen/read more than the six required speeches, if you have the time. This is highly encouraged!
-If this is not finished by the end of the class period, it needs to be finished as homework.
4) If time, Work on Q3 Book Review
-If you finish with the "Speech Sampling" (comparing speeches) assignment, you can use the remainder of the class period to work on your Book Review that is due next Friday.
-If your Book Review is already finished, you may use the remainder of the class period to work on any other homework you may have or read your IR book.

Greetings,
Today you have a substitute because Mrs. G has a planning day with the English 8 teacher team. Please be focused and on-task today. Use this class period to your advantage and make use of the time to prepare for the On-Demand on Day 3 of class.
1) Independent Reading
-Read your IR book silently for 20 minutes.
-The sub will inform you when IR is done and it is time to transition to working on your Claim Statement.
2) Craft Your Claim Statement
-Find the Google Classroom Question post. There you will design, then post your claim statement.
-Use the document attached to this assignment post titled, "Comparative Essay | Prompt (2023)" to help you design your claim. Follow the "Claim Structure" on page 3 of the document to help you design your claim.
-Remember: this claim is your thesis - it will appear at the very end of your Intro Paragraph.
3) Comparative Essay Outline
-Use the "General Outline Structure" (see page 2 of the "Prompt" document) as a reference when you begin to work on your Outline.
-You will compose your Outline exclusively in class today and in your composition notebook. I repeat: you will complete your Outline IN YOUR COMPOSITION NOTEBOOK. Not on a Google Doc. Handwritten in your comp book. You will be able to use this during the On-Demand on Day 3. YOU ARE NOT WRITING A DRAFT. Any and all prep work - written work, like on your Outline - must be completed within the four walls of this classroom. No other work/prep will be accessible during the On-Demand on Day 3.
-You will not be working on your Outline for homework. Whatever is finished in class by the conclusion of today is the Outline work you get to use on Day 3.
--> Outline is due by the end of the class period!
4) HW: Review Mentor Essays
-If you finish your Outline early, review the Mentor Essays. If you work on the Outline until the bell, you will review the Mentor Essays for homework. Simply review/read through - nothing to do or complete.
-Open the attached slideshow.
-Go to Slide 12 and review the linked Mentor Essays.
-Make a mental note of good qualities you notice about the various samples.

Today you have 90-minutes to produce a Comparative Essay. Attached is the prompt - please use it to guide you during the writing process. Manage your time so that you are able to produce the entire four-paragraph essay during the course of the class period.
You May Use:
-Outline (from comp book)
-Any other writing tools/notes in your comp book
-The physical stories - either the hard copies (if you have them in your possession) or you may use the electronic versions (attached to this assignment post).
-Grammarly or another spellcheck to help you with proofreading.
Reminders:
-Only Annotation: Bold your counterargument and corresponding rebuttal.
-Do not leave any comments on your doc (you will not be indicating which Body P is your strongest, like you did on your previous essays).
-Proofread your writing before submitting!
-Whatever is finished by the end of the 90-minute period is the essay Mrs. G will be grading. You need to manage your time; keep an eye on the clock, as you should be averaging about 20-22 minutes per paragraph. If you are a very thorough/detailed writer, do your best to get down all of the main basics for each paragraph first, then return to each paragraph to enhance each with greater detail. A completed essay that shows your mastery of all the key components of a comparative is better than you crafting an essay in which multiple components are missing, but perhaps you did a really good job with one body paragraph. Find a balance between quality and quantity.

Game plan for Day 2 (2/14 or 2/15) and Day 3 (2/16 or 2/17):
Day 2:
1. Transform your Body Paragraph Graphic Organizer into your Final Draft
-Take all of the components from your organizer and reformat them on the attached doc "Craft Essay | Final Draft"
-Essentially, get rid of the graphic organizer, so your fresh Final Draft doc looks like a gorgeously crafted essay.
2. Read --> Edit --> Revise
-After crafting your essay, spend some time reading through your draft. Think: Do things make sense? How is the flow of your essay? Are things organized? What is missing? What needs to improve?
-After reading through, fix things! Edit! Revise! Build up your essay to be stronger!
3. Submit to Paper!
-By the end of class on Day 2, submit your essay to Paper! for feedback.
Day 3:
1. Mentor Essays
-Review the provided mentor essays.
-Use the mentor essays as helpful guides to support your own revisions.

Playlist Curation: Q2 Indie Book (Book Review for Q2)
Complete the attached Google Form. There you will compile a list of ten songs that fit perfectly for a character or characters in your chosen book.
Once you have brainstormed about 10 good quality songs for your character (after you complete the Google Form), you will then narrow that list down to 5 songs. Pick your top five song selections - the best 5 that connect to character(s) or a scene(s) or event(s) from your book.
In addition to having a book summary slide, you will write 5 paragraphs total - for each one of the 5 songs you will write a paragraph justifying why you selected that particular song.
Each paragraph will be a CER: Claim, Evidence, Reasoning. You will make a claim (create an argument about how the song selection connects to that character/moment/event/etc. in the book), provide evidence, and explain your reasoning. Each CER should be a minimum of 5 sentences. Your E (evidence) can come in the form of a direct quote. At least 3 of the quotes need to be from your novel (2 can be quotes from your song selection.
For example, one of your paragraphs may look something like this: "The main character in my book would listen to "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" by the artist, Taylor Swift, because the song is moody and sad and connects to the same feelings Sammy felt in the novel. In the song, it is clear that Taylor is a mixture of upset, angry, sad, and frustrated - the same feelings Sammy feels when they break up with Erik. In the middle of the book the reader can see the downfall and finality of the relationship when Sammy texts Erik one last time, "That is the last time I trust you. Never again" (Steinsen 152). Both Sammy and Taylor make a commitment that they will never allow themselves to be broken again by the person they once loved."
You will complete this assignment as a Google Slides slideshow, not a Google Doc. You will need to open a new Google Slide slideshow and attach it here to this assignment post. The first slide of your slideshow will be a title slide showcasing the book you read and your name. On each of the five additional slides, you will put the song title and artist as the title of each slide, and then write your paragraph in the main text box. Feel free to add some visuals to all or some of the slides. Be as creative as you wish. You will be graded on the 5 CERs, specifically how you support the claim you design about your character and the song chosen.
E (Evidence): At least 3 of your 5 citations must be taken directly from your book. (Meaning: 2 of the 5 can be quotes from the song itself)
Examples will be shown in class and are also attached for your reference.
Slidedeck Slides:
Slide 1: Title Slide - including your name and the name (title and author) of the book you will be reviewing.
Slide 2: Summary/Plot Overview Slide - Give a 5 or more sentence overall summary of the novel. Summarize the book in your own words.
Slide 3: Song 1 - CER
Slide 4: Song 2 - CER
Slide 5: Song 3 - CER
Slide 6: Song 4 - CER
Slide 7: Song 5 - CER
Structure Options:
Focus on Multiple Characters: 1 song per character
Focus on Five Different Key Scenes/Moments in the Book: 1 song per scene
Focus on a Mixture - Songs for individual characters and specific scenes.
