Our Sustainable Societies simulation has two goals:

Hello Wonderful Students!

Please make sure that you are prepared to start filming at the beginning of our next class period. You will have time to practice scenes in between filming, but no time to work on props, so come to class prepared. 

I will have my classroom door open before school if you would like to drop off props in the classroom.

Use the attached Google Doc (Sicily Site of Encounter Info) to take notes on 5-7 in your notebook (see format below). 

Your notes should be EVIDENCE to support the following: 
Focus Question: What made Sicily a successful Site of Encounter (SOE)?


Note: A Site of Encounter is a diverse place where goods, ideas, and technology are exchanged.

As you read through the information consider all the GEPS categories and the following:
What type of leadership would be needed to have a successful SOE?
Is location important for success? If so, why?
What evidence shows Sicily is 'diverse'?
After you complete taking notes, create a collage with words, phrases, and images that represent evidence that Sicily was a successful SOE. (Full directions are in the Google Slides Deck)

Part 1: Watch the video to learn about the beginnings of the Crusades.  You will use the information from the video to ANNOTATE THE CRUSADES MAP in your notebook. There is a screenshot of the final map discussed in the video for you to fill in any gaps you miss.  NEATNESS COUNTS. Start with a pencil (so you can erase) and then add color to highlight important details.

Part 2: Read background information about your assigned perspective.  Based on the reading, fill in the slide that you were assigned. according to how you might have experienced the Crusades.  Be prepared to share your findings with your partners.

If you did not have a chance to complete each slide deck, attached are all the visuals you analyzed in class. Please be prepared to use the information on the slide deck for an activity that we will complete during our next class period.

2. Read through the Guidelines: The overall goal of the pamphlet is to convince a specific group of people that living in the Byzantine Empire is WAY better than living in the ruins of the fallen Roman Empire (now called Western Europe)


3. To start the assignment, students should pick their ‘Target Group’ Ask: Who are the group of people you think you want to write the pamphlet for to take the journey to Byzantine?


4. Students should open the Byzantine Empire Resources Google Doc (Assignment 12. In Google Classroom) to read more about information related to their target group.  
For example: If my target group was “families”, I might read about information on ‘Housing’, ‘Education’ or ‘Entertainment’ to figure out my THREE reasons (evidence) that show why the Byzantine Empire is a great place for families.


5. When looking for a map of the region, make sure students put in the right time period (537 CE) for the Byzantine Empire so that they find an accurate map of the territory.
