On September 10 at 6:00 pm, the two major party candidates for President, Vice President Kamala Harris (D)
and former President Donald Trump (R), will face off in a televised presidential debate. While debates
between presidential candidates are not mandated by the United States Constitution, they have become
common practice over the past fifty years. The first presidential debate between two major party
candidates took place in 1960, in which John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon faced off on live television to
an audience of more than 65 million viewers. Although Nixon was the favored candidate prior to the
debate, his recent weight loss, decision to eschew stage makeup, and tired appearance on screen led to a
Kennedy polling bump that Nixon could never recover from. Thus, the institution of televised presidential
debates became a turning point in American political history — politicians were now subject to scrutiny
by voters on their physical appearance, voice, and body language.
This is an optional extra credit assignment worth 10 points. If you did not already pick up a handout from your teacher you will need to print this handout.
