Upcoming Assignments
Due:
Now that you have read a “Where I’m From” poem and brainstormed, you will be writing your own. In your writing notebook, you’ve already done some pre-writing about memories from your past; now you’re going to turn them into your own “Where I’m From” poem that is about one page long.
Your “Where I’m From” poem should communicate something about your identity. You can reveal important parts of your upbringing, your cultural or racial identity, moments - small or large - that have impacted you, moments/happenings that have influenced your personal characteristics, other humans who have influenced you to be who you are today and who you hope to become in the future. Your poem should incorporate sensory memories like sights, smells, sounds, tastes, and feelings.
Due: When you finish, write it neatly on the cardstock paper (provided in class) or print it out. Then, turn it into your period’s “turn in basket” on 5/22.

Due:
1. 'Make a copy' of your first finished draft (the one due today).
2. Attach that copy here to this assignment post.
Any and all edits to your speech from here on out will occur here on this draft. The content and topic of your speech should remain relatively the same from here on out, as your teacher will be previewing your first draft. If you decide to change the general topic or decide to change the bulk of your speech, you do need to indicate that to your teacher as a private comment on GC at least a week before your delivery day.
3) Work Time:
- Create Final Draft + add to new Final Draft posting on GC
- Revise/edit/improve
- Proofread
- Read through silently + time with a Google timer.
- Read through outside with a partner(s)
- Create notecards on the notecards provided by teacher.
→ Note: This is the last major in-class work day for the Spring Speech.
Note: your due date is the day of your speech delivery date.

Due: Day 2
Follow these steps to create a thoughtful, polished gift for a teacher who has made a difference in your life.
Step 1: Brainstorm & Draft
In your composition book, write a few rough drafts. Your poem must follow the traditional 5-7-5 syllable structure:
Line 1: 5 Syllables
Line 2: 7 Syllables
Line 3: 5 Syllables
The Goal: Show specific gratitude or appreciation for a current teacher or a past teacher from 6th or 7th grade.
Step 2: Selection & Final Copy
Pick your favorite draft from your composition book.
Use the half-sheet of printer paper that you got in class.
Front Side: Write your haiku CLEARLY.
Back Side: Include the delivery information:
To: [Teacher’s Name]
From: [Your Name]
Step 3: Illustrate & Polish
Since these will be delivered directly to the teachers, make them look professional and heartfelt!
Decorate the front to bring the words of your haiku to life.
Use color, neat lettering, and meaningful illustrations.
Ensure the final product is clean and "gift-ready."
Note: Be specific! Instead of just saying "you are nice," try to mention something unique about their class or how they helped you grow.

Homework | Two Parts of your HW to Complete in your Comp Book:
→ Part 1: Comparative Visual Organizer
→ Part 2: 1 Page Write Long in Comp Book
Details:
→ Part 1: Comparative Visual Organizer:
Brainstorm time. You’re going to be comparing two texts. You need to start by identifying important similarities and differences. Two protagonists who have the same hair color is not an important similarity. To find out what is important, start by identifying:
→ the main themes
→ the main conflicts
→ the emotional journey and development of the protagonist.
→ overarching mood and tone of each piece
→ topics in each piece
You can start by making a chart, bulleted side-by-side list, venn diagram, etc. and then write long to grow your ideas. Your essay will gain depth as it progresses. Your ideas get bigger and better and more clear as your write, so use this time write until you figure out which of your ideas are the most amazing, intriguing, and brilliant. Note: this step is about showcasing your mastery of two separate texts - ones we have worked with for weeks - and your ability to make creative connections between them.
→ Part 2: 1 Page Write Long in Comp Book:
Write about trends - similarities and differences you notice from your visual organizer.
Elaborate and expand on those similarities and differences.
Decide whether it would be better to write a comparative about craft or about theme!

Due:
Mrs. Gonterman is out sick today. Please review the following lesson overview for the class period. Work well, independently, and stay focused. This is an independent work period. If you still need to finish your i-Ready 'Reading' Diagnostic, please work on that first instead of working on your 6-Word Memoir Creation.
1) 6-Word Memoir | Personal Creation
-Your finished 100-word memoir creation was due today on GC and was worked on in class on Tuesday, yet was to be finished for homework.
-Now, we will create the visual to represent your tiny memoir and your 6-word memoir creation.
-The guest teacher will give you one white card.
--> Side 1: On one side, you will be including your 100-word memoir creation that you typed up. If you know for a fact you have access to a printer at home, you will print out the 100-word memoir you typed up and paste it to this side of the card when you get home. Keep in mind, you will need to cut the paper to fit. If you do not have a printer at home, you will open to the electronic 100-word tiny memoir you wrote and reference it as you handwrite your tiny memoir on your card; instead of printing it out and gluing on, you will need to handwrite your memoir on your card. Make sure to use a pen that will not bleed through to the front. You are also welcome to write your 100-word tiny memoir on a piece of printer paper, then glue it to the card.
--> Side 2: On the other side of the card, you will write your 6-word memoir in any creative way you see fit. Additionally, on the same side as your 6-word memoir, you will add an illustration or picture(s) of your choosing.
- Create an illustration that corresponds to your memoir and brings it to life - add pizzazz! - Your final product should look polished - any lead pencil should be written over with pen, etc.
-The guest teacher today will show you some completed samples from a previous school year so you can visualize the final product. Keep in mind: the size of paper you have this year versus the samples is slightly different.
Card Creation: Due: Tomorrow! You need to have your finished card creation with both sides completed by the start of class on Thursday!
2) IXL Task
-Once done with your 6-Word Memoir card creation, you will complete one IXL task. There is a chance that you may not even start this in class depending on how detailed you are on your card illustration. If that is the case, know that you are to complete the IXL task for homework due Day 4 (Friday).
-Goal: Reach at least 85% or spend no more than 20 minutes on the lesson.
--> IXL Task - Grade 8 | Vocabulary:
a) Lesson 1: Words with Pre-
--> This IXL task is linked directly to this assignment post. Use that link to go directly to the assignment on IXL.
3) Screenshot Completed Lesson
-> Once you have achieved either 85% or higher (or have spent 20 minutes) on the lesson, go to your Dashboard, then to Grade 8 and the 'V' "Prefixes and Suffixes" Section. Take a screenshot of your score, then add that screenshot as a picture to this assignment post.
--> If not done by the end of the period, this becomes homework Due: Day 4 (Friday).
Finished IXL Task: Due: Friday! Please get the screenshot added to this assignment post by Friday (don't worry about it being flagged as "late"); this assignment post has two items due, so the assigned due date for the posting is tomorrow to reflect when your Memoir Card Creation is due.
--> If you finish your card creation and your IXL task before the bell, work on homework for a different class or read your IR book.

--> IXL Task - Grade 8 | Vocabulary:
a) Lesson 1: Words with Pre-
--> This IXL task is linked directly to this assignment post.
Due:
After completing your brainstorm, select your favorite one of the six brainstorms you just completed. You will now construct a tiny memoir - only 100 words.
Remember: Writing a story about an event in your life in only 100 words is challenging; it forces you, as a writer, to be as concise as possible, while at the same time weaving figurative language and vivid imagery into your story. Your story, though brief, should have an exposition, rising action, a climax, falling action, and a resolution, although not necessarily in that order. Furthermore, any of these pieces may be intertwined; all of these authorial choices are yours to make. Let us get to know you through a moment - a singular moment - in your life. Create a mood for your readers: It can be scary, embarrassing, fun, silly, sad… it’s up to you.
Next Steps:
1) Write your 100-word Tiny Memoir on the doc attached to this assignment post.
--> It may be slightly less, but no more than 100 words.
--> Proofread - make sure it makes sense, flows, has a mood and/or tone that the reader can easily navigate.
2) 6-Word Memoir (Located at the top of the doc near your header)
--> Decide how you can summarize or capture your Tiny Memoir in only 6-words in order to create your 6-Word Memoir. (You should have written this at the top of your 100-word doc).
3) Print out your completed Tiny Memoir
--> Please print out your finished tiny memoir and have it ready in hand on Day 2 (Wednesday).
