English 6 - Gavino - 1(A)-1(A) Assignments

Here is a link to the prefixes. Make sure that we complete these in class. If you missed class, please grab index cards when you return and complete them at home. I will be adding to our prefix list throughout the year. I will check that you have the first 10 prefixes this week.

As I walked around the room today I was observing who was reading the short story and who wasn't. You earned 2 points if you were reading along.

In class you created a menu that used figurative language to describe a dish. No use of technology was allowed and you could work with peers to check/create responses. 

1 point for using figurative language and 1 point for identifying the figurative language correctly (x 5) = 10 points
3 points for creativity (artwork/fancy lettering)
2 points for organization

You may redo this assignment by the end of the grading period for FULL CREDIT but you MUST complete it during flex so that I can confirm authenticity.

I’m really eager to understand what you can do as writers of narratives, of stories, so today, will you please write the best personal narrative, the best true story, that you can write? Make this be the story of one time in your life. You might focus on just a scene or two. You’ll only have this class period of 40 minutes to write this true story, so you’ll need to plan, draft, revise, and edit in one sitting. Write in a way that allows you to show off all you know about narrative writing.

In your writing, make sure you:

Write a beginning for your story.
Use transition words to tell what happened in order.
Elaborate to help readers picture your story.
Show what your story is really about.
Write an ending for your story.

You will decorate your folder (which we will hang for the class to see) and put your work in it throughout the year. On your folder, include a 6 word poem about you.

A six-word poem tells a whole story using exactly six words. To write one, pick a big feeling or memory and cut out all the filler words until only the most powerful action words and nouns remain. You can use punctuation like periods or dashes to create dramatic pauses and surprise your reader.

15 points for a colorful and well organized folder
5 points for a poem that uses 6 words and tells us about you

I will be checking your journals in class.  between August 20th-25th. I will be looking for:
- Formatted correctly (1pt)
- Information is accurate/reflective (1pt)
- Length (3pt)

Points if you were reading silently.

A copy of the Google Slides is below. At the end of our presentation, send me an email (please only complete this in class when I see you August 20th or 21st).

Bring a physical book that:
1. You genuinely want to read
2. Is something interesting to you
3. Is age level appropriate
