Open Strings imovie - Wahooo!

Hello everyone,

I finally finished! Now, fingers crossed that you can actually see it :)

Thank you so much for your patience and thank you to all the families that sent in pictures and video clips! It was so much fun walking down memory lane and watching all of you transform from 5th to 6th graders. I am very proud of your musicality, attention to detail, listening skills, technique, patience, and ability to see beyond yourself that you have developed over the past two years.
Sending virtual high-fives and I am really looking forward to working with you again next year.

Have a great summer kiddos!

*Please remember to only share this with your close family, thank you.

Smart Music and Dragon Hunter (not required)

Hello Open Strings,

Happy last week of school! Our final assignment is, Dragon Hunter. Remember this is just for fun and NOT required. I really enjoy this piece and I hope you will too! Watch for C and F #'s, dotted half notes( = 3 beats), hooked bowing (meaning up, up) and lifts marked with a comma.

If you have not completed at least three assignments in powerschool, please submit them during this last week, or email me.

Have fun!

May 18th-22nd A Pirates' Dream (25-end) in Google Classroom

May 18th-22nd A Pirates' Dream (25-end)

Hello Open Strings,

We are going to continue with A Pirates' Dream this week with a tempo of at least 80 beats per minute, although I would like you to try to speed it up to 90 if possible.

Things to watch out for:
*Ties (continue drawing your bow the same direction. You may need to practice "saving your bow" so you don't run out)
*Bow Lifts at the end
*Violins/Violas - Try to use 4th finger A (stretch a little farther than you think)
*Quarter Notes with slashes = Eighth notes (this is shorthand notation)
*F natural and C natural - Practice with your tuner to see if you are correct.
PLAY: D, E, F natural, G, A, B, C natural

Practice Breakdown (from 25 to the end):
1. Clap rhythms while listening to your part
2 Say the names of notes while clapping
3. Air bow while listening to your part (careful of lifts and ties)
4. Pizzicato your part with recording (listening for intonation)
5. Play with bow paying close attention to note, rhythm, bowing and intonation

Photos and Video for Open Strings IMOVIE

Hello Strings,

We are going to create an end-of-the-year video representing our musical journey over the past one, two years (including 5th grade) depending on how long you have been in the orchestra program. You can submit up to 10 photos and ten 10 second video clips. Be sure to invite your parents to be part of the fun and double check that all photos and video are appropriate before uploading. Thanks for your help and I can't wait to see what you send :)

Assignment for Week of May 11th-15th in Google Classroom

Assignment for Week of May 11th-15th

Hello Open Strings!

This week we are going to be working on, "A Pirate's Dream". This piece is great because we will have a chance to review our "F" and "C" naturals. Also, you are going to see whole notes, dotted half notes, half notes and eighth notes. You can slow the tempo down to at least 80 beats per minute, although I would challenge yourself to see if you can get it up to 90 or 95. If you can't do it that fast and get the score that you want, no worries.

Practicing Breakdown:

1. clap the rhythm and say the names of the notes as the music is playing so you can hear the whole and half steps
2. Airbow paying close attention to the down and up bows while saying the names of the notes
3. Airbow and listen to your part at the same times
4. Practice transitioning from bow to pizzicato and/or pizzicato to bow quickly and accurately
5. Practice just playing pizzicato and focus on left hand. Make sure your "F" and "C" naturals are low enough for violin/viola and that cello and bass players are using 2nd finger. Since you are playing low second finger, make sure your 3rd finger notes are high enough for violin/viola, fourth finger for cellos/bass. If your notes are turning red, check your intonation with your tuner to see if your 2nd, 3rd and 4th fingers are in the correct position. Then while playing, keep reminding your fingers where they should go :)

If you have any questions or if you are having trouble with playing this, please visit my open office hours Monday and Wednesdays at 1:15pm.

Smart Music - Salamander Samba in Google Classroom

Smart Music - Salamander Samba

Hello Open Strings,

This week I chose a piece that should be very easy for everyone. It only has open strings so that we can focus just on our rhythm.

We are playing from the beginning to rehearsal "C" with a tempo marking of at least 90. Challenge yourself to see how fast you can set the tempo without falling off the train :)

Our goal this week is to strive for 90% accuracy. With that said, if you are practicing at least three days a week and are still having trouble getting 90% correct, please submit what you have. Be sure to email me with any questions.

Food for thought - Please don't get discouraged with low scores. We need to remind ourselves that it is about the process, not the score. There are some huge life lessons we can learn from smart music, even though it can feel frustrating and downright discouraging at times. Keep your head up and remember, "Try your best and forget the rest"- YOU'VE GOT THIS!!

Week of April 27th-May 1st Smart Music Assignment - "The Beast" in Google Classroom

Week of April 27th-May 1st Smart Music Assignment - "The Beast"

Hi Open Strings Students,

This week we are going to learn a new piece called, "Beast". Not only does it sound really cool, it is in 3/4 time. Wahoo!

*I highly recommend just clapping your part before playing it since it will take a little time to get the feeling of 3 beats per measure.
*After clapping your part, try air bowing your part to feel the slurs
*Then start putting together the notes, rhythm and bowing slowly

*When you are ready to make your recording, be sure to put in earbuds OR turn off all of the other sounds including the metronome, your part and the accompaniment part.

Also, two students have noted that they like using the "note cursor" setting the best. Try it out :)
Email me with questions.

Assignment for Week of April 13th-17th in Google Classroom

Assignment for Week of April 13th-17th

Hello Open Strings,

I hope you had a great spring break!

I have attached expectation for orchestra below called, "Remote Learning Weekly Schedule". I hope this will visually provide a better understanding of what is expected for daily home practice. This should also help you plan out your daily practice schedule in preparation for your assignment due every Friday in Smart Music.
Like I mentioned, I have deleted all of our old assignments in Smart Music and added a new piece of music called, "Medieval Kings". I adapted the tempo marking so you can record it as slow as 75, but I'm hoping many of you will challenge yourself to play it as fast as 95 :) ......SPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED.....hahaha
I would like you to have a 85% or above before submitting this on Friday.

Also, I have noticed that if I try to follow the cursor as the music is playing, that I tend to play too late. I highly recommend experiment with turning off the cursor or trying the "flow cursor". The computer program doesn't understand that most musicians read ahead of actually playing. (Professionals read up to two measures ahead - pretty amazing!) For our purpose, I would rely on your ears, not your eyes to match the tempo. The assignment this week should be much easier than before. Email me with questions.
You got this Trojans!

Orchestra Auditions for 2020-21 school year in Google Classroom

Orchestra Auditions for 2020-21 school year

Attached are the excerpts for each orchestra including: Intermediate, Advanced and Chamber Strings. Please make sure you have printed the correct part for your instrument (violin, viola, cello and bass), as well as the correct orchestra class (written on the part).
*Look at the key signature carefully*

If you are interested in trying for chamber strings - go for it!
Even if you don't make into chamber, your video will work as your audition into either Intermediate or Advanced orchestra. Please try not to stress too much and remember that this is a process. It may take you several auditions to make it - Keep your head up and keep trying!

Also, take the time to practice the music (a lot) before you begin recording yourself. Allow plenty of time to make several videos before you pick the best one. If you aren't sure what to do or have questions, please email me or visit me during my new open office hours on Wednesdays from 9-9:30am.

**Auditions are still due Monday, March 30th - Please let me know if you do not have an instrument at home so that I can give you an extension**

Fall Performance in Google Classroom

Fall Performance

Hello Open String Families,

Our first performance of the year will be on Friday, Sept 27th at 3:30pm in the orchestra room, #B1. This is a bit of an informal concert where we will be demonstrating how we tune our instruments, warm-up with scales, and a few pieces that we have been working on since the beginning of the year. This will be a short 20 minute performance and since it will be held in our room, there will be standing room only. Please let me know if someone in your family that will need a chair to sit in.

*Students need to wear their black, music t-shirts and long pants. (We will be passing out the t-shirts in the next couple of weeks.)
*Students need to arrive no later than 3:15pm to set up

Participation is critical even for smallest of performances. Each and every student plays an important role with their partner, section and overall balance of the orchestra. We rely on each other and work as a team for a successful performance. With that said, if you are not able to make the concert, please be sure to fill out the performance conflict form below so that your child will be able to make up the missed points.
We are looking forward to seeing you on Sept 27th!
