Important to Remember:
-The attached template (the copy that has been populated for you) is VERY generic - you are encouraged to switch up the slide layout, the formatting, style, colors, etc. Make it YOUR OWN! Give it personality!
-Don't forget: Written Reflection.
--> This is a brief reflection you will include on the poem of choice you plan to recite to the class on Day 3 during our Poetry Cafe. (See the yellow shaded area of the Portfolio document for more details).
--> Do not forget to include the written reflection for the ONE poem you are choosing to recite. No other poem is required to have a written reflection, just the one.
DUE DATE: Your completed slidedeck Portfolio is due Day 3 at 10pm.

Today is your Poetry On-Demand Analysis.
You have the entire class period to complete your On-Demand (Part I, Part II, Part III, and Part IV), although you should only need about 50-60 minutes. When done, work on your Poetry Portfolio (slidedeck) and begin prepping for your recitation that is happening on Day 3 of class.
During the On-Demand:
-You may use the internet to research specific words/phrases/specific references/time periods/the author, etc. from the poem. But, you CANNOT directly research the poem or the significance of the poem. If you are observed doing this on Go Guardian, you will receive an automatic 50% on this summative. The poem analysis is YOUR interpretation and YOUR moment to showcase your ability to master poetry analysis.
-Start by reading through the five poem options on the second document. Decide which one you like most, then copy it (original poem and the poem broken apart in the graphic organizer) and paste it in the yellow 'Part II' section of the document. (When pasting, make sure you get rid of the yellow highlighting that was already there)
-Annotate the poem using the highlight tool.
-Fill out the graphic organizer (where the poem is broken down into individual sections or stanzas).
-Then, complete Parts III and IV.

For homework before class on Day 3, prepare for your Socratic Seminar.
Your notes for the SS will be collected for credit.
-->At a minimum, you should be annotating directly on the hard copy of the poem you received on Day 2 of class.
--> Recommended (but not required) prep: make a copy of the attached document (this is the same document you will see for the Poetry On-Demand Analysis next week) and complete it for either one or both of your SS poems. You would also need to print out the completed document, if you would like to use it during the SS on Day 3 (since no laptops will be out during the SS). This prep will help you to be the most prepared for you to be successful in your SS.

Hi -
You have a sub today, Tuesday 5/3 and tomorrow, Wednesday 5/4. Both days are silent, independent work periods. This is the lesson overview and game for both days:
TUESDAY (Non-Block Schedule):
1) Poem Creation - Time of Day Poem
-This is a 'Question' on GC. 'Answer'/respond with your poem creation.

2) Poem Analysis - "To a Daughter Leaving Home" (Parts I, II, and III)
-This is a separate posting on GC.
-Today: Parts I, II, and III are to be worked on. (Save Parts IV and V for Wednesday)
__________________________________________________
WEDNESDAY (Minimum Schedule):
1) Poem Analysis - "To a Daughter Leaving Home" (Parts IV and V)
-Continue to work on the same document as yesterday.
-Today: Complete Parts IV and V and any other parts of the document that you need to finish or revise.
--> As long as you work diligently on Tuesday and Wednesday, it is very possible to complete this entire document in class. Whatever is not finished, can be worked on outside of class, although the due date is Wednesday.
If you finish early, work on homework for another class or read your independent reading book silently.

REMEMBER: Your "Where I'm From" Visual Creation is still due on Thursday (P 1, 3, 5) or Friday (P 2, 6). There will be specific areas of the room to place your project, if it does not fit in the turn in tray. Pay attention to the number labeling of different areas of the room to indicate where your creation should be placed. Make sure your name and period is on your creation or written in the title section of your poem.

Happy Friday!
Today you have Mrs. Verdoia as a sub. Please be on your best behavior. You will be working independently (silently!) on all of the following tasks. TURN IN HAIKU to turn-in tray at the start of the class!
Here is the game plan for the day:
1) SSR
-You will read your indie book for 20 minutes.
2) Poetry Slidedeck
-Review slides 42-72 (we have already reviewed slides 1-41 on Day 2 of class).
-Read through slides 42-56.
-Slides 57 + 58: Have an action item. Refer to the Google Classroom 'Question' post that connects to the two tasks you are asked to complete.
-Ignore Slide 59 (you will NOT be sharing out today). Instead, read through at least five other poem postings from peers in your class. There is nothing you need to do - no comments you need to post - unless you feel so inclined to do so. Up to you!
-Read through slides 60-70
-Slides 71 + 72: Here you will find your homework detailed. The assignment posting is on GC. A blank doc has been started for you - write your poem there. Hopefully, you can finish this in class.
-STOP - don't read through any other slides. STOP at slide 72.
3) If finished with your Inanimate Object Poem creation (your homework for the weekend):
-Work on your Book Review! (It is due tonight!)
-If done with your Book Review, read your Indie Book or silently work on homework for another class.
-If you have any questions or confusion, quietly ask a peer or Mrs. Verdoia to clarify, before emailing :)

Due:
For this poetry creation, you are going to write lines about a place in your life that has either had a positive OR negative impact on your life.
Write a poem about that place.
Cannot be a haiku or an acrostic poem.
Give it a title.
Should be a minimum of 12 lines.
Design with as many stanzas as needed.
Can be any style/form you desire (rhyming or not).
Focus on using: imagery (vivid images), sensory details (taste, touch, sight, hearing, smell), intentional line breaks, and purposeful punctuation.
The reader should feel as though they are transported to the place you are describing in your poem.
The reader should also sense the intended tone/mood of the poem that clearly indicates it is a place that is either a positive or negative one in your life.
You have 15-20 minutes to create this poem. Be ready to share out after posting.
-> For P2 and P6:
-Once you post your creation, move onto the next slide in the slideshow, after posting.
-Note: the next slide (Slide 58) will ask you to come back to this same post and create a second poem creation. Insert a line between the two creations to differentiate the two. Make sure both have a title.

This will be introduced on Day 1 (4/4). Work time will be given on Day 1 and Day 3 of class. Completed product will be due at the end of class on Day 3. It should be worked on throughout the week during class and for homework.
Due:
On Day 3 of class, you received a printed copy of the questions for your Socratic Seminar.
For homework, please prepare notes for each question (all 10). It is recommended that you go in-depth with a response for at least 5 of the 10. Going in-depth would involve you jotting down corresponding direct evidence from the text, making an outside connection to something else in society, anticipating counter arguments that may be constructed, etc.
Please work on this for homework. Technically, it is not due until Day 2, but keep in mind that two other summative tasks for this unit will be happening next week. Finishing this early, before the seminar on Day 2 of class, allows you to get ahead of next week's workload.
--> It is preferred that you complete the hard copy of the packet by hand, although if you would like to work on it electronically, it is attached to this assignment post. If you complete it electronically, you are committing to printing it out at home.

For homework, after Day 2 of class, spend some time reviewing the Mentor Essay samples to get inspired.
Links to the mentor samples are on Slide 8 of the attached slidedeck.
--> Keep in mind:
-These are not perfect examples. (There may be some flaws)
-Some are comparing a text with a novel, a published poem, a song, etc. (You are comparing two texts, so your argument flow may appear differently)
There is NOTHING to turn in. It is simply up to you to review some or all of these samples to help inspire your own work. Other than that, there is no physical thing you need to turn in or submit. Simply read, take it in, process the info, get inspired!

- Today is your Comparative On-Demand -
At the start of the class period - maybe even before the bell rings - retrieve your comp book from your class' stack under the whiteboard. Also, take out the two hard copies of your annotated stories - keep in mind the 'hard copy' for "The Lottery" is the one you annotated on GC (feel free to 'unsubmit', in case you have not already done so, in order to see your annotations).
During the On-Demand you may use the hard copies of the texts, your outline in your comp, and any other Write Long you have in your comp book.
Again, if Mrs. G is able to discover evidence of you having written your essay previous to this class period - either in its entirety or a significant chunk of it, more than what should have been done on your outline - you will get a ZERO. Doing so, is a violation of your own personal integrity and most importantly, involves you cheating on an important examination (this essay is a writing examination aka test). Expect to get a ZERO, a referral, and a phone call home to your parents.
With that final warning, *GOOD LUCK* (YAY!). You have 90 minutes to complete this On-Demand Essay Examination.
1. Write!
-Use your Outline and anything else from your comp book to compose your essay.
-Write your essay on the document attached to this assignment post.
-Respond to the Essay Prompt (attached).
2. Read --> Edit --> Revise
-If you have additional time remaining:
-->After crafting your paragraphs, spend some time reading through your draft. Think: Do things make sense? How is the flow of your essay? Are things organized? What is missing? What needs to improve?
-->After reading through, fix things! Edit! Revise! Build up your essay to be stronger!
3. Rubric Review
-Take a look at the rubric.
-Compare the rubric criteria to your essay product!
-Consider: How would you score? What can you do to make your essay stronger?
-Spend some more time revising!
4. Annotations + Reminders
-Super Important: complete the required annotations requested of you (these can be found on the doc titled, "Comparative | Final Draft Annotations and Reminders")
--> The only annotation is: If you included any CAs or Rebuttals (in each Body Paragraph), please underline.
-Review the reminders given to you.
--> Emphasis on CRAFT - look for where you can incorporate more of your own personal craft into the essay.
-Please make sure to submit your essay by the bell. Even if you are not finished, submit what you have completed.
-Anything submitted beyond the due date time on this GC post (which is a generous 5-minutes after the original bell) will be marked 'late' and given an immediate 5% penalty.

We will be going over this slide deck in class on Monday.
For homework, finish the write long (detailed on the last slide). This write long is to be completed in your composition notebook. Title it, "Comparative Write Long".
--> This should be about a page in length in which you begin to brainstorm which of the two texts you would like to compare.
--> Instead of using this page to compare just two, you may want to select a few to compare to help you narrow down to the best two you want to use.
--> This write long is very open-ended. Can be more of a chart situation, venn diagram, bulleted comparison list, etc.

3. Comparative | Claim Statement (5-10 minutes)
-Find this assignment post on GC.
-Craft your claim on that Google Classroom Question post. 'Answer' the 'Question'.
-Read the details in the post - especially pay attention to the sentence frames and two samples provided.

Game plan for 2/10 or 2/11:
1. Transform your Body Paragraph Graphic Organizer into your Final Draft
-Take all of the components from your organizer and reformat them on the attached doc "Craft Essay | Final Draft"
-Essentially, get rid of the graphic organizer, so your fresh Final Draft doc looks like a gorgeously crafted essay.
2. Read --> Edit --> Revise
-After crafting your paragraphs, spend some time reading through your draft. Think: Do things make sense? How is the flow of your essay? Are things organized? What is missing? What needs to improve?
-After reading through, fix things! Edit! Revise! Build up your essay to be stronger!
3. Rubric Review
-Take a look at the rubric.
-Compare the rubric criteria to your essay product!
-Consider: How would you score? What can you do to make your essay stronger?
-Spend some more time revising!
4. Annotations + Reminders
-Super Important: complete the required annotations requested of you (these can be found on the doc titled, "Literary | Final Draft Annotations and Reminders")
-Review the reminders given to you.
5. Peer Feedback (?)
-If there is time.....
-If you think you would truly benefit from doing so....
-If there is another peer in class who is also to this stage in the essay work process.....
--> If all of the above apply, you may work with a partner to give and receive some feedback on your essay.

Respond to this 'Question' with the Claim Statement for your Craft Essay.
--> Your claim should be a complete statement that includes your argument. Remember: You are arguing that the author of your text successfully uses a particular technique (aka: craft move) (white and green sheet) to achieve an authorial goal or goals (purple sheet).
-For example, if I chose Option 1, my claim may look like this:
Throughout the text, Lowry uses the technique of flashbacks to establish a mysterious mood throughout the text as Jonas aims to discover the real truth during his interactions with leaders in the community, with the Giver, and during his escape with Gabriel.
-For example, if I chose Option 2, my claim may look like this:
Throughout the story, Lowry uses the craft move of flashbacks to establish a mysterious mood as Jonas travels on his journey to discover the truth and comments on the disillusionment of a perfect society, as a society can never truly be perfect.

Game plan for 1/27 or 1/28:
1. Transform your Body Paragraph Graphic Organizer into your Final Draft
-Take all of the components from your organizer and reformat them on the attached doc "Theme Essay | Final Draft"
-Essentially, get rid of the graphic organizer, so your fresh Final Draft doc looks like two gorgeously crafted Body Ps.
2. Read --> Edit --> Revise
-After crafting your two GORGEOUS Ps, then spend some time reading through your draft.
-Super Important: complete the required annotations requested of you (these can be found on the doc titled, "Theme | Final Draft Annotations and Reminders")

Playlist Curation: Q2 Indie Book (Book Review for Q2)
Complete the attached Google Form. There you will compile a list of ten songs that fit perfectly for a character or characters in your chosen book.
Once you have brainstormed about 10 good quality songs for your character (after you complete the Google Form), you will then narrow that list down to 5 songs. Pick your top five song selections - the best 5 that connect to character(s) or a scene(s) or event(s) from your book.
You will write 5 paragraphs total - for each one of the 5 songs you will write a paragraph justifying why you selected that particular song.
Each paragraph will be a CER: Claim, Evidence, Reasoning. You will make a claim (create an argument about how the song selection connects to that character/moment/event/etc. in the book), provide evidence, and explain your reasoning. Each CER should be a minimum of 5 sentences. Your E (evidence) can come in the form of a direct quote or a summary/paraphrase of the moment in your own words.
For example, one of your paragraphs may look something like this: "The main character in my book would listen to "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" by the artist, Taylor Swift, because the song is moody and sad and connects to the same feelings Sammy felt in the novel. In the song, it is clear that Taylor is a mixture of upset, angry, sad, and frustrated - the same feelings Sammy feels when they break up with Erik. In the middle of the book the reader can see the downfall and finality of the relationship when Sammy texts Erik one last time, "That is the last time I trust you. Never again" (Steinsen 152). Both Sammy and Taylor make a commitment that they will never allow themselves to be broken again by the person they once loved."
You will complete this assignment as a Google Slides slideshow, not a Google Doc. You will need to open a new Google Slide slideshow and attach it here to this assignment post. The first slide of your slideshow will be a title slide showcasing the book you read and your name. On each of the five additional slides, you will put the song title and artist as the title of each slide, and then write your paragraph in the main text box. Feel free to add some visuals to all or some of the slides. Be as creative as you wish. You will be graded on the 5 CERs, specifically how you support the claim you design about your character and the song chosen.

Good day,
Today Mrs. Yost is your substitute. Please make sure to be focused and to make the best use of your time during the class period. You only have a few days left before the Mock Trial (eeeeek....scary!, I know! so get to work!). If you have a Mock Trial question, first ask your group members, then ask Mrs. Yost, then ask Mrs. Yost if you could go across the way to ask Mrs. Mercer. Try to avoid emailing Mrs. G to the best of your ability.
Today, you will work on the following things:
1. Indie Reading
-You will read your Indie book for 15 minutes.
2. Objections: What are they and how can they be used?
-Watch the video attached to this assignment post.
-Use your earbuds to watch/listen to the video.
-Consider:
What did you learn about the purpose and use of objections? Think about how you may need to use objections when listening to the examination(s) of the opposition.
-Review and read through the attached doc titled, 'Mock Trial | Objections'
3. Continue Working on Opening and Closing Statements
-Lawyers: continue to work on your opening and closing statements.
-Open the document your group started to design last class.
-Remember: Opening and Closing Statements will each be a maximum of 4 mins and 30 secs, but you do not need to use the entire time allotment.
-Lawyers Must: determine who will be delivering the opening and who will be delivering the closing statements.
--> Two lawyers may team up to deliver one statement, if desired, but there can be no more than two.
-As you work on designing and practicing your opening and closing statements, consider how you are incorporating Ethos, Pathos, and/or Logos to attract your audience (the jury and judge). Review the Ethos, Pathos, and Logos slidedeck re-posted to this assignment post.
-Please use the comment feature to indicate with a comment where in both statements Ethos, Pathos and/or Logos is being used. (Work on this with your teammates).
*Your opening and closing document is due by the end of class today. Please submit to the assignment post titled, "Mock Trial | Opening + Closing Statements"
4. WITNESSES: Continue to Work on Designing Your Cheat Sheet
-Continue to work on your witness 'cheat sheet'. This is where you will compile any and all notes you would like to have access to when you are being questioned on the stand during the trial.
-You may have only one piece of paper front and back. This may be typed and/or handwritten. (Mrs. G recommends that you type up this cheat sheet to keep things organized and easy to read). If you type this cheat sheet, it must be printed out as a hard copy, as you will not have access to your laptop during the trial.
-Your 'cheat sheet' will be checked on Monday 12/6.
5. Final Workspace Doc
-Here, as a group, you will compile all essential docs in the eyes of your group in one concise space.
-Select one person from your group to track down the 'Final Workspace' doc that corresponds to your group (Trial A is Petzicon and Trial B is Blume). (Find this doc in the Mock Trial Materials section)
-That person will 'make a copy' --> Share it with all group members --> Attach it to the assignment post titled, 'Mock Trial | Final Workspace' (do not submit, as you will lose access)
-Together as a group, you will work to complete the doc - including linking in the proper components - and have the doc finished by the end of the class period.
6. Lawyers to Practice Direct Examination with Your Witness
-With the remaining time, all lawyers completing a direct examination need to work directly with your corresponding witness to run through your direct examination.
-Do your best to isolate yourself from the rest of the group so that you and the witness you will be direct examining have some private space to run through your line of questioning. (Find a quiet space in the classroom or directly outside - with the permission from Mrs. Yost)

You will need earbuds in class on Day 2 and Day 3 this week in order to listen to a few assigned videos. Please make sure to bring your own earbuds, as no loaners will be available for you to access in class.
Due:
Good day,
2. Watch the Mock Trial Videos
-The four videos are attached to this assignment post.
-Use your earbuds to watch/listen to all four.
-Consider:
Did watching the direct and cross examination examples make you rethink how you structured your own line of questioning?
What did you learn about opening and closing statements? Think about what you want to apply to your own as you begin to design them today.
--> All group members should finish watching the videos around the same time, but in the event you finish before your group mates, open up your Line of Questioning doc(s) and work on those for a few moments until the rest of your group is ready to move to Designing Opening and Closing Statements.
3. Design Opening and Closing Statements
-As a group (witnesses and lawyers) begin to design your opening and closing statements.
-Have one group member open a new document and label it according to your group's assignment: [Blume or Petzicon] [Defense or Prosecution]. For your header within the doc, write down all names of group members.
-Have that one group member, share the doc with all group members. All group members need to be 'editors'.
-Remember: Opening and Closing Statements will each be a maximum of 4 mins and 30 secs, but you do not need to use the entire time allotment.
-As a group (witnesses and lawyers), you will work on designing the opening and closing statements. Although lawyers will be the leaders of this conversation, witnesses will help to assist in the beginning design of the statements. Lawyers can decide when they want to take complete control and send witnesses off to work on their notes cheat sheet.
-Lawyers Must: determine who will be delivering the opening and who will be delivering the closing statements.
--> Two lawyers may team up to deliver one statement, if desired, but there can be no more than two.
-The opening and closing statement doc will be turned in at the end of class on Day 3, so work on it a bit today, but you will also have some time on Day 3 during class.
4. WITNESSES: Finish 'Witness: Self - Cross Examination' Graphic Organizer, then Design Your Cheat Sheet
-At this point, your 'Witness: Self - Cross Examination' doc should be complete. If it is not, work on that first, before moving to work on your cheat sheet. This doc is due 8:30am Day 3 (before Day 3 of class). Remember, you do not have to press "turn in" because you will lose access to the doc. Simply make sure it is attached by Day 3 at 8:30am.
-Begin to work on your witness 'cheat sheet'.
5. LAWYERS: Pause on Opening and Closing Statements, Finish Line of Questioning Doc
-Your Line of Questioning docs (you may have 1, 2, or 3 in total, depending on how many witnesses you are questioning) are due 8:30am Day 3 (before Day 3 of class). Remember, you do not have to press "turn in" because you will lose access to the doc. Simply make sure it is attached by Day 3 at 8:30am.

In reflecting on our Socratic Seminar last class,
1. What do you think went well for you? What are you proud of or happy with in terms of your own performance?
2. What is something that you want to work on for future Socratic Seminar discussions?
3. Overall, did you enjoy the Seminar? Why or why not?
Please answer these three questions with complete sentences and a thoughtful response. Number each response according to the number of the original question.

Due:
After you complete your Final CER 'product' writing task, you will work on this graphic organizer to help you prep for your Socratic Seminar.
Look at the second doc to determine which group you are assigned to for the SS. This group corresponds to the questions you will be working with. For example, if you are in Group B, you only get to select from the Group B questions.
At a minimum you are required to prepare the answers to four of the questions of your choosing from your corresponding group. The questions you select are entirely up to you - pick questions that intrigue you. If you would like to answer/prepare for more than four, you are more than welcome to do so. Your note section can contain bullet points or paragraphs - up to you!
If you have access to a printer at home, please print out the Graphic Organizer once you have filled it in. If you do not have access to a printer, no worries - the doc can stay on your computer and you can use your computer during the SS, albeit not ideal for the flow of the seminar.

Hello,
Today you have a substitute as Mrs. Gonterman is not feeling well. Grab a Frankenstein book from your table group's stack and take out earbuds, if you have them. If you do not, you will be unable to listen to the audio of the text today and will have to read the physical book. Make sure all SIX books return back to the table stack by the conclusion of the period. Please complete the following task items:
1) Indie Reading
-Read your indie reading book silently for 15 minutes.
-The sub will let you know when the 15 minutes is complete.
2) Frankenstein 1.2 (Sub-Unit 1, Lesson 2)
--> Complete Tabs 2-8
Tab 2:

-Skip/Ignore Pages 2 + 3 (you will not be completing the "Gallery Paraphrase")
Tab 5:
-Complete Pages 1 + 2.

-Read through the attached doc, "Writing Assistance for Amplify: Lesson 2"
-In the doc you will find sentence frames for your Claim and Evidence. (Essentially 2/3 of your CER is done for you, you simply need to piece it together and finish by fortifying your own reasoning).
-This CER will be graded on Reasoning.
-Take a look at the CER Rubrics to see how CERs this unit will be graded.
Tab 7:
-Skip.
Tab 8:
-Complete the 1.2 Solo.
Anything that is not completed in class today, must be completed for homework. Please work diligently and independently on these tasks today.

-This CER will be graded on Reasoning.
-Take a look at the CER Rubrics to see how CERs this unit will be graded.

_________________________________
MLA Format Check/Reminders:
12pt font
Times New Roman
Double-spaced
1-inch margins
Page header (last name and page number) (Mrs. G will show you this in class)
Student header in upper left of page one (only page one)
CREATIVE TITLE! (this should pertain specifically to your essay and what you have created - make it uniquely yours)
___________________________________
Delete/Get Rid Of/Fix the Following:
1) Your highlighted 2-3 sentence nugget. (UNHIGHLIGHT IT….DEHIGHLIGHT(??) IT)
2) Transitional phrases/words - the ones you originally bolded or bolded/underlined (UNBOLD and UN-UNDERLINE) (make the transitional phrases look like a regular old typical moment in your memoir; they should not appear as anything special (but don’t tell them that))
3) If you have decided to work with a peer to peer review, make sure any and all comments are deleted or fixed (Mrs. G should not see any comments or recommended edits from any person but you, the writer)
____________________________________
DO THE FOLLOWING:
1) Beginning + End: BOLD your beginning + end (any paragraph/sentence that you identify as part of your beginning and end: BOLD)
2) Craft Moves: Use the ‘comment’ feature to indicate where in your essay you have used at least 2 craft moves and 2+ instances of each craft move. (Meaning: if you used ‘simile’ as a craft move, comment and show me where you used similes on at least two occasions.) (But, that would only count as one craft move - so you would need to show me where you used a second craft move and 2+ occasions of that craft move.
--> For example:
-Metaphor - Indicate where in your writing you used this 2+ times.
-Personification - Indicate where in your writing you used this 2+ times.
-Symbolism - Indicate where in your writing you used this 2+ times.
- - - Remember, only 2 craft moves are required, but you can show more if you desire.

This is simply a check-in to see how your book is going. Answer the following:
Give the title and author of your book.
In four sentences, tell me about the main character (the most main/key/heavy hitter there ever was...in your book, of course) - who they are, what they are like, their trials and tribulations, interests, key characteristics, hobbies, etc.

3. What do you feel like you did well in this draft?
4. What do you feel like you need to work on for Draft Two?

You should have just read 3 of the other 6 remaining student samples.

Here is where you will submit your completed Draft One of your Memoir. At this point, you have already created a Google Doc somewhere in your Drive, so take that and add it to this assignment post. Remember: This is your first completed draft - nowhere near your final ('product') draft. Over the next week, we will continue to edit/modify/omit/enhance/add to/etc. this draft.
The due date/time for this draft iteration is the end of this class period, to try and ensure you have a productive class work period. BUT, if you need some time this weekend to be able to work on it, feel free to take that time to do so. Know that even though it is marked "late" here on GC, it is in fact, NOT LATE. Again, I repeat - IT IS NOT LATE, as long as you have it in and submitted by 8:30am on Day 1 of class next week.
______________
If you finish "early" - PAUSE. Then do the following:
1. Re-read your memoir from start to finish. Ask yourself: Does it make sense? Did I naturally spilt my writing into various paragraphs to ensure an appropriate flow and that pauses amidst my writing exist? (Go and make the necessary edits to your writing!)
2. After proofreading and editing, take a look at your two comp book glue-ins - specifically the green "Literary Devices" glue-in.
-Ask yourself: Where did I - if at all - put in literary devices within my draft?
-Determine where it would be appropriate to add in more literary devices to your writing!
_______________
Before submitting, make sure of the following:
1. Your entire doc (including your student header + title of essay) is in MLA format:
-Times New Roman
-Double-spaced
-12 pt Font
2. You gave your essay a creative title.
-This should be specific to your essay!
3. You aimed for 2+ pages of writing.
-This was your initial goal. Most likely, you pushed beyond 2 pages and that is wonderful!

If done before the end of the period, you may use the remainder of class to:
1) Read your Independent Reading Book
OR
2) Work on any other homework you may have for a different class!

Hi - as you were informed earlier in the week, today you have a substitute. Please make sure you are on your best behavior. As a reminder, if your name gets written down for a negative reason, we will have a chat upon my return about your behavior, then a call home to your parents - let's avoid this happening! Be a good, focused, and studious student today.

Today is an independent work day in which you will complete the following three tasks:
1) SSR
-Today, SSR (our sustained silent reading time) will be 15-20 minutes.
-You should have your indie reading book with you, but if not, go and borrow one temporarily from my library.
-READ (silently!)
2) Sample Student Memoirs
-Go to the Student Sample Memoirs on GC (under 'Memoir' section).
-Select 3 to read. (Note: We already read Memoirs 1, 2, 3, so pick 3 of the other remaining 6)
-Read those 3 silently to yourself.
-Then, respond to the GC Question, titled, "Warm Up: Sample Student Memoirs".
3) Flashdrafting Time (Part 2)!
-Spend the remainder of your class period working on your draft.
-Hopefully, by the conclusion of the period most of you will be ready to submit your completed Draft One.
-There is a post on GC titled, "Memoir | Draft One". There is where you will be submitting your completed draft.
-Please read the instructions on the assignment post for more details.
-Ideally, you will have your completed first draft done by the conclusion of the class period, BUT, if you need more time, you can take it. Just make sure it is completed by 8:30am on Day 1 of class next week.
-Reminder: There is no music listening during drafting time today. Additionally, there is NO asking the sub for music time. (You know the rules and were reminded of this on Day 2 of class :) )
As a gift for your hard diligent work today, I have decided to give you Monday off! You have earned it :) I hope you have an enjoyable and restful long weekend!

Due:
Use the next few days to narrow down your thoughts/ideas about your upcoming memoir and decide on the one part/moment/event/experience/lesson learned from your life that you want to write about. On Monday we will begin to flashdraft, so it is imperative that you narrow down your potential writing topics to the one.
1) Give a 1 sentence description of planned memoir topic/experience.
2) A short description of the planned main takeaway or lesson learned from that life experience.
-Label your answer as follows:
Topic: [Your response here]
Lesson/Takeaway: [Your response here]
For example, if I decided to write about the time in which I got caught "cheating" in Spanish class in high school, I may write my answer like this:
Topic: The time I got in trouble for cheating in high school by giving my homework to a peer to copy as her own work.
Lesson/Takeaway: Disappointing the ones who matter most (self + parents) and defining my own moral/ethical code.
(The sample above in bold is all you need to include in your 'answer' to this GC Question)

Instructions for today, Monday 8/23:
1) Today you will have a substitute. Please make sure to treat them with respect and kindness.
2) You will be working on one task that has three parts. Specifically, you will be reading and analyzing three different published memoirs. View this experience as an opportunity to view the well-written memoirs of others, prior to you crafting your own memoir at the conclusion of this unit.
-All three memoirs are linked within the document for you to view/read. If you are interested in taking notes or annotating as you read, "make a copy" of the memoir doc so that you can take notes as you read (i.e. highlighting, underlining, comments in the margins, etc.). Taking notes/annotating is completely optional for this assignment, but is encouraged.
-Complete the vertical chart boxes corresponding to each memoir with thorough responses.
-THIS IS AN INDEPENDENT TASK, meaning you are to work silently without needing to communicate with any peer.
-Anything that is not finished before the bell, should be completed for homework.
-Use your work time diligently, as it is possible to complete this task during the class period.
-If you "finish early", you are to work on homework for another class, read your independent reading book, or read a book from the class library.
If you have any questions, please ask your substitute for help or briefly ask a nearby peer, prior to you reaching out to Mrs. Gonterman.
