Due:
Here is where you will construct your own "Where I'm From" poem. This is Part I of a two part assignment. Part II involves you taking your poem creation and bringing it to life in a creative visual creation. (Note: examples of these visuals have been shown to you in class and are available whenever you would like to see them.)
This Part I of your "Where I'm From" project will be Monday 5/5 at 8:30am, although many of you will finish your first completed draft by the end of class on Day 2 this week, Wednesday 4/30. As soon as you are done with Part I, you should begin to work on the visual creation.

Due:
1) Memoir Sampling - Student Mentor Memoir SamplesToday (Day 1 - 4/28 or 4/29) you will first start by reading at least four of the attached memoir student samples. Keep in mind these examples are written in the genre/format of memoir.
Then, you will start drafting your Spring Speech. The first completed draft is due by the end of class on Day 3 this week.
2) First Completed Speech Draft
-Once finished with reviewing the mentor sample memoirs, you will spend the remainder of the class period beginning your first draft.
-The due date of this first draft is Day 3 (5/1 or 5/2). You will then spend the reminder of most of Day 3, revising, editing, previewing with a peer, practicing your delivery, then transforming it into a final draft. You will also be provided notecards in order to create notecards for the delivery of your speech.
-Write your first draft on the document provided in this assignment posting titled, "Spring Speech | Draft 1"
-You will notice that there is an area for you to indicate a 'Song Selection'. You are probably wondering, what does Mrs. G mean by "Song Selection"?? Well, after delivering your speech, the entire class will reflect privately on your speech and while doing so, your chosen song will play.
This song might cater to the content/topic of your speech or it may cater to the mood/tone of your speech.
It does need to be *clean* and school appropriate. (If you have any concerns about your song not following this guideline, pick a different song and/or check in with Mrs. G.
Pick your song with intention!
Make sure it is available on Apple Music or if you know it is not, please include a hyperlink in your title linking it to YouTube.
It may be in a different language.
It may be completely instrumental.
You may have a song in mind right away or you may have no idea right now, and that is fine too! Wait until you are done writing your speech to determine your song selection, as hopefully the writing of your speech inspires you to select a particular song.
-Spend the remainder of the period drafting your speech!
-Work silently and independently! If you need to ask a peer a quick question, do so, then get back to work!
You may be wondering: "How many paragraphs is it supposed to be?!" There is no requirement, but naturally your speech better be constructed into various paragraphs. Think: naturally where do you change the scene or switch to a different point? Or where should a long breath be taken?? --> A paragraph break should probably go there!
Remember: It is not about "how many paragraphs" but rather, the speech needs to be more than 2 minutes and less than 4 minutes in length. Most likely you will be writing about 2-3 double-spaced pages, although that varies per person.
Then, you will start drafting your Spring Speech. The first completed draft is due by the end of class on Day 3 this week.

Today you have 90-minutes to produce a Craft Essay. Attached is the prompt - please use it to guide you during the writing process. Manage your time so that you are able to produce the entire four-paragraph essay during the course of the class period.
You May Use:
-Outline (turned in on GC) (feel free to unsubmit, but leave attached on GC - it will not be marked "late" by Mrs. G)
-Essay Graphic Organizer (turned in on GC) (feel free to unsubmit, but leave attached on GC - it will not be marked "late" by Mrs. G)
-Any other writing tools/notes in your comp book
-The physical stories - either the hard copies (if you have them in your possession) or you may use the electronic versions (attached to this assignment post).
-The spellcheck tool on Google Docs
-The Annotations + Reminders Doc (attached on this assignment post)
Reminders:
-Only Annotations:
--> Underline any counterargument and corresponding rebuttal.
--> *star* The last punctuation of your strongest body P *
-Proofread your writing before submitting!
-Whatever is finished by the end of the 90-minute period is the essay Mrs. G will be grading. You need to manage your time; keep an eye on the clock, as you should be averaging about 20-22 minutes per paragraph. If you are a very thorough/detailed writer, do your best to get down all of the main basics for each paragraph first, then return to each paragraph to enhance each with greater detail. A completed essay that shows your mastery of all the key components of a comparative is better than you crafting an essay in which multiple components are missing, but perhaps you did a really good job with one body paragraph. Find a balance between quality and quantity.
-If time, review the rubric!

-After reading through, fix things! Edit! Revise! Build up your essay to be stronger!
3. Rubric Review
-Take a look at the rubric.
-Compare the rubric criteria to your essay product!
-Consider: How would you score? What can you do to make your essay stronger?

Today Mrs. G is out sick again. You will be working on Part 2 of your i-Ready mid-year diagnostic. Please take your time with it; read every question and answer thoughtfully. Do not rush through your test, as it will get flagged and then we will have a discussion - let's avoid needing to do this. As long as you work diligently, you should be able to finish the diagnostic before the end of the period.
Note for Period 2: Due to the drill impacting the period, we will continue with the diagnostic on Friday.
1) i-Ready Diagnostic
-Log into i-Ready through Clever.
-The 'Reading' Diagnostic should pop up as a pop-up window. If it does not, please email me. Note: if this is a class-wide issue, tell the guest teacher.
-If you do not finish before the bell, you will finish during IR on Day 3.
-Note: Although your English grade will not be impacted by your grade on the diagnostic, the grade/assessment of your performance will be sent home to your parent/guardian and goes on your student record, so do your best and take it seriously.
2) Read your Book Club book
-Once you are finished with your diagnostic, you will read your Book Club book until the bell.
-Note: your next official Book Club meeting with your group is Day 3 (Thurs or Fri) this week. Make sure you are caught up on all of your reading.
HW: Read your assigned Book Club pages!

Due:
Greetings,
Today you have a guest teacher. Please review all of the following and work diligently during the class period. Be focused and productive when you are with your Book Club group. Know that whatever is not finished by the end of the period is homework due Day 2 (tomorrow!).
1) IR (15)
-For 20 minutes, you will read your independent reading book. Your guest teacher will let you know when the 20 minutes are complete.
-Remember: this is not your Book Club book; this must be your independent reading book.
2) IR Tracker (5)
-Please fill out your IR Tracker
3) Signposts | Notice and Note (10)
-With your Book Club group mates, read through this attached slidedeck.
4) Three Levels of Questions (15)
-With your Book Club group mates, read through the attached document ("Book Club | Three Levels of Questions"), then review "Book Club | Costs's Three Levels of Questions". Use your peers in your Book Club book as resources in order to make sense of the levels of reasoning. Consider/think about ways in which you can craft questions that are level 1, 2, and 3 questions.
5) Assignment: Group Meeting 1 (35)
-Spend about 5 minutes discussing the book thus far - What are your initial thoughts? Do you like it? What do you wonder? Who do you think will emerge as the main protagonist(s)?
-After your brief discussion of the first reading, complete the attached document titled, "Book Club | Book Meeting Document".
-One group member is to 'make a copy' of the attached document, then share with all group members; this should be group member that was selected on the back of your group calendar. That same group member will be the only group member to attach the document here on this GC post. Make sure that the document gets attached, but not 'turned in' until the entire group is finished with the document, as once it gets turned in, the other group members lose editing access. Again, only the owner of the doc will be the one who adds it to this assignment post. Essentially, each group member will write their own entry in each section of the doc for a total of five entries per group member.
-This document is due by the conclusion of the class period today. Whatever is not done becomes homework, although there is plenty of time to finish this in the amount of time given, provided your group is focused this class period. As soon as you are done entering in your five entries, move onto reading.
-Note: The owner of the doc will not be penalized for "turning it in late"; the only penalty will go to group members who have not completed their sections on time.
6) Read Your Book Club Book (10+)
-Until the bell, you are to start on your reading that is due on Wednesday. Please continue to do your end of chapter/section 3-sentence summaries on your post-it notes throughout the book.

Go back to the in-class CER you crafted and print it as a hard copy to turn in on Wednesday. Do not unsubmit the assignment, as there will be a penalty. Simply print it. If Google Classroom is not allowing you to print, make a copy of the doc and print that copied version.
Do not print the passages - the only thing you need to print is your CER paragraph.
If you do not have access to a printer, add a comment to this assignment that says "No access to a printer" so Mrs. G knows she will assess your electronic copy.

Happy Tuesday! You have a guest teacher today, as Mrs. G was called into jury duty. She hopes to see you again on Wednesday. Please review and complete all of the following during this class period:
1) Independent Reading
-Read your IR book silently and independently for 20 minutes.
-The guest teacher will set a timer and will let you know when the 20 minutes has finished.
2) Vocabulary Quiz Reminder: as promised last week, there will be a vocabulary quiz on Friday. The vocabulary words you had on your slideshow last week will be the only ones that appear on the quiz.
--> Recommended: review and master the slidedeck you completed last week.
--> Very much recommended: Print out that slidedeck and use the slides you created as notecards to help you prep for the quiz. (When printing and the printing menu pops up, click "More Settings", then under "Pages Per Sheet", change it from 1 to either 4 or 6 - whichever you prefer. Doing this allows your slides to transform easily to notecards and all you need to do is write the vocab words on the back blank side.
3) Amplify - Frankenstein Lesson 5
-Go to Lesson 5 (we are skipping Lesson 4, as it is a Flex Day)
-Take out headphones, if you have them, in order to listen to the audio of the chapter.
-Normally we would go through the lesson together, but today you will work independently (aka: by yourself).
-Complete the following:
--> Tab 2
--> Tab 3
--> Tab 4
--> Tab 5: No group/partner for this. Just review it on your own.
--> Tab 6: No group/partner for this. Complete it on your own. Paraphrase each excerpt. Paraphrase the text into more everyday language.
--> Tab 7: No group/partner for this. Complete it on your own. Paraphrase each excerpt. Paraphrase the text into more everyday language.
--> Tab 8: See the assignment posting on GC titled "Frankie | Lesson 5 Write/CER (Tab 8)" The language and question on Tab 8 is a little unclear, so you will ignore what is on Tab 8 and instead complete the CER writing task you will see as a separate posting here on GC. Use the CER Checklist (in the document) to help you construct your CER.
--> Tab 9: Skip/don't complete.
--> Tab 10: Complete the Solo directly on Amplify. If you need to check the word count, use the space towards the bottom of your CER document where you completed Tab 8's CER Writing.
Manage your time well. Stay focused, as the period will go by fast. Most students yesterday in periods 1 and 5 were able to complete most or all of their CER. If there is anything you have not finished from this lesson, you need to finish for homework Due: Friday.

After completing your brainstorm - the one introduced on Wednesday - select your favorite one of the six. You will now construct a tiny memoir - only 100 words.
Remember: Writing a story about an event in your life in only 100 words is challenging; it forces you, as a writer, to be as concise as possible, while at the same time weaving figurative language and vivid imagery into your story. Your story, though brief, should have an exposition, rising action, a climax, falling action, and a resolution, although not necessarily in that order. Furthermore, any of these pieces may be intertwined; all of these authorial choices are yours to make. Let us get to know you through a moment - a singular moment - in your life. Create a mood for your readers: It can be scary, embarrassing, fun, silly, sad… it’s up to you.
Next Steps:
1) Write your 100-word Tiny Memoir on the doc attached to this assignment post.
--> It may be slightly less, but no more than 100 words.
--> Proofread - make sure it makes sense, flows, has a mood and/or tone that the reader can easily navigate.
2) Print out your completed Tiny Memoir
--> If by chance you do not have a printer, you may either: handwrite your Tiny Memoir or have Mrs. G print it out before class on Day 1 and then glue your 6-Word Memoir page that you already created.
3) 6-Word Memoir
--> Decide how you can summarize or capture your Tiny Memoir in only 6-words in order to create your 6-Word Memoir.
--> Write your 6-Word Memoir on the back (blank side) of your Tiny Memoir. (This may be printed or hand-written)
--> Create an illustration that corresponds to your memoir and brings it to life - add pizzazz!
--> Your final product should look polished - any lead pencil should be written over with pen, etc.
--> You will have at least 10 minutes on Day 1 to finalize the your 6-Word Memoir and illustration.
