Line 3: 5 Syllables
The Goal: Show specific gratitude or appreciation for a current teacher or a past teacher from 6th or 7th grade.
Step 2: Selection & Final Copy
Pick your favorite draft from your composition book.
Use the half-sheet of printer paper that you got in class.
Front Side: Write your haiku CLEARLY.
Back Side: Include the delivery information:
To: [Teacher’s Name]
From: [Your Name]
Step 3: Illustrate & Polish
Since these will be delivered directly to the teachers, make them look professional and heartfelt!
Decorate the front to bring the words of your haiku to life.
Use color, neat lettering, and meaningful illustrations.
Ensure the final product is clean and "gift-ready."
Note: Be specific! Instead of just saying "you are nice," try to mention something unique about their class or how they helped you grow.

   → Part 1: Comparative Visual Organizer:
Brainstorm time. You’re going to be comparing two texts. You need to start by identifying important similarities and differences. Two protagonists who have the same hair color is not an important similarity. To find out what is important, start by identifying:
→ the main themes
→  the main conflicts
→ the emotional journey and development of the protagonist. 
→ overarching mood and tone of each piece
→ topics in each piece 
You can start by making a chart, bulleted side-by-side list, venn diagram, etc. and then write long to grow your ideas. Your essay will gain depth as it progresses. Your ideas get bigger and better and more clear as your write, so use this time write until you figure out which of your ideas are the most amazing, intriguing, and brilliant. Note: this step is about showcasing your mastery of two separate texts - ones we have worked with for weeks - and your ability to make creative connections between them.

   → Part 2: 1 Page Write Long in Comp Book:

Write about trends - similarities and differences you notice from your visual organizer.  
Elaborate and expand on those similarities and differences. 
Decide whether it would be better to write a comparative about craft or about theme!

Today you will produce the Craft Essay in class. 

Please use the following directions to guide you during the writing process. Manage your time so that you are able to produce the entire four-paragraph essay during the course of the class period.

Homework Assignment: Symbolism Deep-Dive

Identification
First, find one or two symbols that appear repeatedly in your chosen text.
Note: You are exploring these symbols to understand the author's craft; you do not necessarily have to write about "symbolism" as the primary technique in your final Craft Essay.
Writing Task: "Write Long"
In your composition notebook, write at least one full page titled: "Symbolism in __"title of the short story that you chose"__
Your analysis should address the following three pillars:
1) Appearance & Context: Describe how the symbols physically appear in specific scenes. What are the characters doing when these symbols surface? How do the characters feel about the symbol and how do they react to it?
2) Authorial Goal: Why did the author embed these specific symbols into the text? What "hidden" layer are they trying to communicate without saying it out loud?
3) Overall Effectiveness: What is the effectiveness of the symbols for the overall text, characters, and reader?
- The Characters: Do the symbols represent a character's growth or internal struggle?
- The Reader: What emotional response or epiphany does the symbol trigger in us?

Quick Tip for your Write Long:
If you're feeling stuck, try the "Action → Abstract" method. Start by describing the physical Action involving the symbol (e.g., “The character keeps dropping their keys...”) and then pivot to the Abstract meaning (e.g., “...which represents their loss of control over their domestic life.”)

Directions: 

Use the table in your copy of the "Craft | Collecting Craft Moves" document to collect craft moves from the text you have chosen for your Craft Essay. The text you choose must be different from the one you chose for the Theme Essay.
 Focus on the two craft moves you appreciate most being used by the author or the two you appreciate the author using well/‘craftily’.  Hopefully these occurrences of craft moves you will document are connected to a key scene, a key moment of characters interacting, or an essential part of the plot.  
There is one brief example added in the organizer for you to reference. → See the bottom of the doc for a reminder list of craft moves and authorial goals. 
→ At a minimum, please find and describe 3 different instances of each craft move being used. (A minimum of 6 rows - at least 3 entries for each craft move will be complete)

1. Transform your Body Paragraph Graphic Organizer (Outline) into your Final Draft
-Take all of the components from your organizer and reformat them on the attached doc "Theme Essay | Final Draft"
-Essentially, get rid of the graphic organizer, so your fresh Final Draft doc looks like two gorgeously crafted Body Ps. 

2. Read --> Edit --> Revise
-After crafting your two GORGEOUS Ps, then spend some time reading through your draft. Think: Do things make sense? How is the flow of your essay?  Are things organized? What is missing? What needs to improve?
-After reading through, fix things! Edit! Revise! Build up your essay to be stronger!

3. Rubric Review
-Take a look at the rubric. 
-Compare the rubric criteria to your essay product! 
-Consider: How would you score? What can you do to make your essay stronger?
-Spend some more time revising!

4. Annotations + Reminders
-Super Important: complete the required annotations requested of you (these can be found on the doc titled, "Theme | Final Draft Annotations and Reminders")
-Review the reminders given to you. 

5. PRINT OUT ESSAY (Hardy Copy)
-Print out a hard copy of your essay, as you will physically turn this in (in addition to submitting on GC).

WW | Craft Moves Write Long (HW)

Write at least one page in your comp book about at least two different craft moves used in your chosen text for your Theme Essay. 
For each craft move, identify at least 2 instances of that craft move being used by the author. (So 4 instances of craft moves in total, highlighting 2 different types - ex: 2 instances of similes and 2 instances of sensory details.) 
Title for the entry: WW | Session 3 - Craft Moves Write Long (HW)
Find essential scenes/events FIRST. 
Then look for specific recurring and noticeable craft moves in those scenes! Write LONG about those scenes. 
Your writing should feel like 4 mini CERs (C) you construct a claim about a craft move being used; E) you cite the specific quote; R) use reasoning to connect the craft move back to your theme statement and make connections about why/how the author incorporated that craft move in their writing.

You will read an excerpt from the graphic novel Maus. In this section, Vladek explains how life in Poland changed for Jewish people, including rising violence and fear.

Sensitive Content:
The poem includes vivid and disturbing images from Kimel’s experiences. Some of this may be upsetting. We will have time to talk about your reactions and questions. At the end of the lesson, we’ll discuss why studying these events helps us recognize the dangers of hatred and prevent similar actions in the future.

Your homework after the lesson for Sub Unit 3, Lesson 2 has two parts:

1) Finish CER Write on Tab 5
-This was started in class.

2) Solo on Tab 9
-Complete the Solo for Lesson 3.2. 

-Due: Day 1 after break.  Hopefully you used your time wisely in class when you were given time to work on your CER, so it should either be done or close to being finished. Try to use your Flex time on Thursday and/or Friday to work on whatever is left of your CER and then work on your Solo.

This is a reminder for those scheduled to do Book Talks next week.  Your Book Talk is Wednesday 10/29.  You have also received an email from Mrs. Bateman; please make sure to read, review, then respond to the email, as that is a requirement.

After reading "The Red Fox Fur Coat" in class on Day 1, you will complete this for homework, due: Day 2.

Please bring your Frankenstein book to school on Wednesday, as we will be able to return them to the Library when we are there for Book Talks.  

If you do not have your book with you on Wednesday to return, you will then need to return it on your own time to the Library.

This is a friendly reminder that your Socratic Seminar is on Day 3 of class.  

You should have at least 5 of the 11 questions prepared and ready on your packet.  Reminder to anyone filling it out electronically, you have committed to printing out your packet, so make sure to do that prior to our class period. 

Also, for those struggling to finish the packet in a timely reminder, remember: that has been your ONLY homework all week.  You were provided the packet in class on Day 1 and no other homework has been assigned this week.  Additionally, most students had anywhere from 10-30 minutes in class on Day 1 to work on their packet.  You packet needs to be completed by Day 3 of class.

During your Frankenstein Reading Test on Wednesday you will be listening to various audio passages.  Please bring headphones/earbuds in your backpack for Wednesday's class.

4) Frankenstein | Lesson 13 (65)
-Log onto Amplify. Go to Lesson 13. 
-Take out headphones so you can have them to listen to the audio while reading. Borrow from the hanging caddy behind the television, if needed; if you borrow, make sure you return them to their original home by then end of the period. 
-Tab 1: Launch the Vocabulary App.  Spend ~7 minutes doing vocabulary in the app. 
-Tab 2: Complete the reading and the questions on pages 1 + 2.  Whenever it says to discuss, you will think about the question independently to yourself in your mind. 
-Tab 3: Complete questions 1 + 2. Respond thoughtfully. Your written response should be at least 4 sentences in length. 
-Tab 4: Read the passage and contemplate the questions in your mind. 
-Tab 5: Complete pages 1-4.  Your response to each question's written response should be a minimum of 3 sentences, with the only exception being Question 2 on Page 4; there you will create a list of general topics. 
-Tab 6: CER Write. Compose a fortified CER. Whatever is not finished in class, becomes Part 1 of your homework due Day 2.

-Remember, you still have access and can practice vocabulary using the previous Volumes 1 + 2 Gimkits on GC; the ones you used to practice for your Volume 1 and Volume II quizzes.

Also, for evidence, you may either use dialogue or narration that can be quoted OR you can reference a graphic/illustration as a piece of evidence. For example I may frame my evidence like this when referencing a graphic: "On p. 99 the picture of the creature standing with Felix, Agatha, and the blind man indicates that he truly wanted to be a part of their family and views himself as an equal even though he knows he is different.
--> There should be plenty of time to finish your CER, but in case you do not, it becomes Part 1 of your homework.

1) 6-Word Memoir | Personal Creation
-Your finished 100-word memoir creation was due today on GC and was worked on in class on Tuesday, yet was to be finished for homework.  
-Now, we will create the visual to represent your tiny memoir and your 6-word memoir creation.  
-The guest teacher will give you one white card.  
--> Side 1: On one side, you will be including your 100-word memoir creation that you typed up. If you know for a fact you have access to a printer at home, you will print out the 100-word memoir you typed up and paste it to this side of the card when you get home.  Keep in mind, you will need to cut the paper to fit.  If you do not have a printer at home, you will open to the electronic 100-word tiny memoir you wrote and reference it as you handwrite your tiny memoir on your card; instead of printing it out and gluing on, you will need to handwrite your memoir on your card.  Make sure to use a pen that will not bleed through to the front.  You are also welcome to write your 100-word tiny memoir on a piece of printer paper, then glue it to the card. 
--> Side 2: On the other side of the card, you will write your 6-word memoir in any creative way you see fit.  Additionally, on the same side as your 6-word memoir, you will add an illustration or picture(s) of your choosing. 
- Create an illustration that corresponds to your memoir and brings it to life - add pizzazz! - Your final product should look polished - any lead pencil should be written over with pen, etc.  

-The guest teacher today will show you some completed samples from a previous school year so you can visualize the final product.  Keep in mind: the size of paper you have this year versus the samples is slightly different. 

Card Creation: Due: Tomorrow! You need to have your finished card creation with both sides completed by the start of class on Thursday!


2) IXL Task
-Once done with your 6-Word Memoir card creation, you will complete one IXL task.  There is a chance that you may not even start this in class depending on how detailed you are on your card illustration.  If that is the case, know that you are to complete the IXL task for homework due Day 4 (Friday).

After completing your brainstorm, select your favorite one of the six brainstorms you just completed.  You will now construct a tiny memoir - only 100 words. 

Remember: Writing a story about an event in your life in only 100 words is challenging; it forces you, as a writer, to be as concise as possible, while at the same time weaving figurative language and vivid imagery into your story. Your story, though brief, should have an exposition, rising action, a climax, falling action, and a resolution, although not necessarily in that order. Furthermore, any of these pieces may be intertwined; all of these authorial choices are yours to make. Let us get to know you through a moment - a singular moment - in your life. Create a mood for your readers: It can be scary, embarrassing, fun, silly, sad… it’s up to you. 

Next Steps:
1) Write your 100-word Tiny Memoir on the doc attached to this assignment post.

This is a reminder to bring your IR book starting Day 1 this week!

The course syllabus was out as a hard copy in class on 8/18 or 8/19.  Please read it, review it, then sign it with a parent/guardian.  The signed cutoff sheet on page 5 is due on Day 3 this week (Thursday 8/21 for P. 3 + 5 or Friday 8/22 for P. 2, 4, 6).

Make sure to bring your charged Chromebook and an IR book all week during your i-Ready Diagnostic.

This is just a reminder that your finished hexagon is due on Day 1 next week, in case you did not turn it in by the end of class on Friday.
