English 7 - Mathews - 2(A)-2(A) Assignments

On Thursday/Friday, you will complete the final assessment for our Realistic Fiction unit: An on-demand realistic fiction story.  This task is an opportunity for you to show me what you've learned about writing during our first unit. The assessment is worth 50 product points, and how you perform will have a significant impact on your Quarter 1 grade.

For this assessment:
You will write a new story
You will have one hour to write
All writing must be completed in the classroom (i.e. no copying & pasting allowed)
In order to be prepared, I highly encourage you to do some brainstorming on the attached sheet. If you come prepared with a story plan, you will have more time to focus on writing during the assessment.  

You can choose to bring a snack to share for our publishing party on Wednesday. This is optional.  You can still participate in the party if you don't bring anything :-) 

Please note:
1. Refrigeration is not available, so please bring an item that doesn't require a refrigerator
2. There is no sink in the classroom, so avoid anything too sticky or messy
3. There are 27 people in your class, so a small snack would be plenty - no need to bring huge quantities 
4. Ms. Mathews will have plates, bowls, cups, and napkins available

Homework 

Use attached slides to finalize your story (put in Slideshow mode). 

Don't forget:
1. Resolve all comments
2. Consider the feedback you received on the Peer Editing Sheet
3. Use Spelling & Grammar Check under the Tools menu
4. Read your story OUT LOUD from beginning to end.  Fix anything that needs fixing
5. Use the Narrative Writing Checklist in your notebook to do a final check on your story

Directions: Choose your favorite book and recreate its spine to proudly display on our classroom bookshelf!  In order to earn full credit, you must complete neat, careful work, so please don't rush.

On the template you received in class:
1. Copy the book spine exactly OR create your own (keeping the book's style the same)
2. Include the title (spelled & capitalized correctly)
3. Include the author (spelled & capitalized correctly)
4. Include color and/or illustrations 
5. Neatly cut out your book spine
5. Write your name and period in pencil on the back

In-Class Assignment

This is a pre-assessment which means it's not graded.  I will use this assessment to understand what kind of writer you are.  It will help me decide what kind of lessons this class needs during our realistic fiction unit, and it will allow you to see your growth from beginning to end of unit.
