2024-2025 Wrestling Rules


All teams must start their season no sooner than the date determined on the WVAL year calendar.


Wrestling Weigh-in Procedure


  1. 2 pound allowance entire season

  1. A wrestler must weigh at least 65 lbs. to wrestle in the 70 lbs. weight class.  If a wrestler is less than 65 lbs., they may only wrestle an opponent with no more than 7 lb. weight difference.  

  1. In the weight classes 75 lbs. thru 120 lbs. wrestlers may only move up one weight class more than their actual weight.  There may not be more than a 7 lbs. weight difference between opponents. (You may not account for the 2 lb. allowance when making the calculations).

  1. In the weight classes 125 lbs. thru 175 lbs. wrestlers may only move up one weight class more than their actual weight.  There may not be more than a 12 lbs. weight difference between opponents. (You may not account for the 2 lb. allowance when making the calculations).  

  1. A wrestler must weigh at least 176 lbs. to wrestle in the 205 lbs. weight class. 

  1. A wrestler must weigh at least 206 lbs. to wrestle in the HWT.  weight class. 

  1. Weigh-in before each dual meet (Varsity only)
    1. Rosters will be initialed by the opposing coach to verify the wrestler's weight is correct.
    2. Heavyweight class is 206-237 lbs.

  1. Teams may not take part in a chant or cadence that may be deemed offensive by the opposing team.

Tournament Procedure


    1. High school rulebook with middle school modification
      1. Three one minute periods
      2. No advantage time or points.
  • Headgear is mandatory.
    1. Athletic shoes must be worn.
    2. Weight classification:
      1. 70, 75,80,85,90,95,100,105,110,115,120,125,135,145,155,165,175,
      2. 205,HWT
      3. Mouth pieces are required for all athletes with braces.  This applies to dual meets as well.

  1. League varsity finals will hold weigh-ins at the host school the day before from 3:45-5:00 pm.  If a wrestler is too heavy, they must remain in the weigh-in room and retry the weigh-in in 15 minutes.  They may not leave the room to exercise. 
    1. At least one coach from a different school must be present during Varsity league championship weigh-ins.
    2. A final Varsity roster stating athletes current weight and weight class going to wrestle in needs to be signed by both weigh in coaches and a copy needs to be turned in at the seeding meeting.
    3. No females should be present during weigh-ins of male athletes
    4. Female wrestlers will be weighed in separately to males and must have two coaches present during weigh-ins.
    5. Athletes must weigh while wearing a singlet.

  1. To seed wrestlers for the league meet, a coach must attend the seeding meeting.
    1. Seeding meeting criteria for placing wrestlers:
      1. Head to head at weight 
      2. Overall head to head
      3. Record at weight
      4. Overall record
      5. Record vs. common opponents
      6. Coaches vote

  1. Wrestlers are not to cut weight.

  1. If a wrestler is too heavy for his/her weight class on the tournament scale, a challenge scale (must be certified) will be used to weigh the athlete. If they make weight on the challenge scale the athlete may wrestle at that weight.

  1. The host school for the Varsity League finals are responsible for collecting entrance fees to help cover tournament costs.  Suggestion - $4.00 for adults, $2.00 for kids.

Awards


  1. Dual Meets may be scored but not announced at the meet as the match’s progress.
    1. There will be no trophy awarded to the dual meet championships.

  1. Tournament team champion
    1. Plaque

  1. Individual awards (at tournaments)
    1. Champion and runner up (Medal and advance to Sectional Tournament)
    2. Third place (Medal and advance to Sectional Tournament)
    3. Fourth Place Medals
